![]() "Ferrari confused its fans - and created a near riot - when it showed its new supercar in Tokyo this week. Here we have two more views of the car, showing the tail and a side view. Originally called "FX" in pre-release publicity, the Tokyo car, seen at an art exhibition "Artedinamica: Ferrari and Maserati," at the Contemporary Art Museum of Tokyo's International Exhibition was named "F140" - but we still believe it's going to be the new Farrari F60 when it is "officially" launched at the Paris Motor Show later this year.. Insiders say the car will have a 485 kW V12 engine, suifficient to hurl it to 330 km/h, while the big news is that there are no fancy wings to hold the back end down at that speed - instead the designers have used huge venturis under the rear deck to provide the necessary downforce. Extra grip will be provided by the car's all-wheel-drive transmisson - a first for ferrai - while the tyres chosen are quite extreme. ![]() At the front are 245/40 ZR18, while the back gets 345/35 ZR19 - and naturally they're Bridgestone's just like the F1 car uses. It was unveiled alongside a clay model of the Maserati Quattroporte, also scheduled for launch at Paris. Designed by Pininfarina, and expected to be powered by a 4.3-litre V8, the car aims to tempt buyers away from rivals such as the Jaguar XJ and Mercedes S-Class." |

Million Dollar FX
"Meet Ferrari's first million dollar roadcar, the FX.
Designed to succeed the F40 and F50, the mid-engined V12 two-seater - perhaps to be rebadged F60 or even Enzo (in tribute to Ferrari's founder) - is Ferrari's most advanced road car to date. Its maker says the car represents the ultimate expression of technology transer from Formula 1 to road-going cars. The FX prototype pictured makes its world debut at the 'Artedinamica' Ferrari and Maserati at the Contemporary Art Museum of Tokyo international exhibition opening tomorrow. It'll stay on display at the museum until July 14. The FX's international automotive debut will take place at the Paris Auto Show on September 26. Ferrari is still persisting in calling the prototype a design study, but it's thought highly unlikely the production model will look radically different. The styling suggests Ferrari is keen to emphasis the relationship between its road cars and F1 machines. Already, some are suggesting the FX is awkward and too angular. But even if it isn't likely to be remembered as a design classic, the new car will be a blistering drive. It features the very latest technology derived from the company's Formula 1 and GT experience. The car is to be powered by a McLaren F1-chasing, mid-mounted V12 which, thanks to variable valve-timing, is good for 484kW. Weighing 30 percent less than the 4.7-litre unit in the F50, the new 6.0-litre engine will punch the car to 100kmh from a standing start in 3.2 seconds, will do 0-160kmh in around 6s - making it half a second quicker than an F50 - and be good for 330kmh. It's being said that the new supercar exceeds the power output of Ferrari's 1989 Formula One car. The aim is to leave the McLaren F1, current holder of the 'world's fastest roadcar' title, eating dust. Construction relies heavily on carbonfibre to reach the weight target of just 1200kg and power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed F1-style sequential gearbox. An early prototype of Ferrari's FX Suspension is by double uneven length wishbones all round; dampers are electronically-controlled to adjust the attitude of the car at pace. And that's without a rear wing. It's now clear the huge rear wing suggested by spy photos of early prototypes - the black car pictured - was just a decoy. The price-tag will be as stratospheric as the performance - they're already talking half a million Euros, or just over $NZ1 million. Which means the average first division Lotto win will barely make a nice deposit. Customer delivery begins in December. According to reports from Europe, the Ferrari's development has been plagued with difficulties. In the most serious incident, a prototype was destroyed by fire as it was being driven at the firm's Italian test track. Despite the fact that the car carried extinguishers, and a fire engine was on hand, flames reduced the carbon bodywork to ashes in less than an hour. Ferrari decided to show the FX prototype at the 'Artedinamica' show for two reasons. One is because Japan is a hugely important market. Secondly, the designer is Ken Okuyama, a Japanese stylist who also penned the 2000 Ferrari Rossa." |

Ferrari continues to forge a link between its Formula One racing cars and road versio
"Ferrari has revealed the first official picture of what it claims will be its fastest model when it makes its world debut at the Paris Motor Show in September.
The FX is powered by a 650hp 6.0-letre V12 engine that will catapult the car from 0-96kph in 3.2 seconds, beating the F50's 3.7 record. Called FX by Ferrari, the new supercar is expected to be badged F60. The FX is powered by a 650hp 6.0-litre V12 engine that will catapult the car from 0-96kph in 3.2 seconds, beating the F50's 3.7 record. This motor weighs 30% less than the 4.7-litre unit in the F50. By using carbonfibre to make the body, weight has been kept to a minium. Ferrari's aim was to keep the FX under 1,200kg. Like the F50, Ferrari wants to forge a link between its Formula One racing cars and road versions. The front of the mid-engined FX has a nose aping that of Schuey's grand prix toy. As well, drivers will be able to change seven forward gears on the steering wheel. The FX uses a double wishbone suspension with electronically controlled dampers to yield what Ferrari insiders claim is ``ultimate'' downforce for such a road car. The top speed has not been released yet, but is said by sources to be in excess of 340kph. Ferrari aims to make each of its ``fastest'' cars faster than their predecessors. The line started with the 288 GTO in 1984, F40 1987 and F50 in 1995. The price of the FX is mostly likely to land at around 20 million baht in Europe. Including taxes, a local buyer can expect to fork out about 60 million baht." |
