Thanks for the great comments! Maybe I'll take some outdoors pics soon. I heard that tamiya clear does weird things to decals, I didn't spray clear yet because I'm afraid it might ruin my model. Any suggestions?

I painted the part semi gloss black, held a piece of mesh tightly against the part, then sprayed a light coat of gunmetal over it. HERE is a nice tutorial from tamiya's site.

I used green ribbons for the strap and used THIS template for the buckles.
