Thumbs up Re: Switching to Synthetic..bad?

Planning to switch my car over to synthetic tomorrow....
99 Civic Ex -- crankshaft and motor was replaced roughly 35k ago
been running plain 5w30 since 40k when i got it.
I have been reading up and is it BS that you cant switch back...
I am assuming that i dont need to add anything in order to switch?
but should i be using partial syn. for my first switch???
also....should i make another switch after 1-2k miles???
these are just some ideas ive read........
oh yeah and i saw that lucas oil stabilizer in the store....
whats up with it....is it for leaks or something?

Make the switch, you can go ahead and use partial or full synthetic oil in your car... use either 5w30 or 5w20. Once you pick what oil you want to use...be it synthetic or dino, STICK WITH IT. Oh and i woudn't pour any oil treatment into my crankcase...even Lucas. Oil treatments are all BS. So dont add anything when switching.

Re: Switching to Synthetic..bad?

this is just my opinion but if anything you should expect not to burn oil switching to syn oil....my rex has 250k and still runs strong....it burns regular oil and I do pound the hell outta her, but put some good synthetic in her and the oil lasts twice as long...no leaks either...

if your car is burning oil or leaking oil the something's wrong with your engine...to say it won't leak or burn oil sounds like a myth

Re: Switching to Synthetic..bad?

You dont need to switch anything else over when you switch to synthetic. My dad was in the oil business for a long time, and talked to a rep for Castrol and the rep even told him that you can get close to the same protection from running like 4 quarts of convential with 1 quart of synthetic, as you would if you ran full synthetic. Now how true it is, I don't know, I usually run full synthetic and still change every 3000 miles. I like using the synthetic because of the higher protection and the extra miles if I need it. If your planning on running it for its full life, of 7k or more, you need to switch filters. Most filters are only good for 3k miles and thats it. You could always just change the filter too if you wanted to, but I would just change it all.

As for Lucas, Lucas is one of the few additives that isn't BS. I swear by Lucas, especially their tranny additive, which might take an hour to pour in, but well worth it. I have known a tranny to loose all gears but like first and reverse, put a thing of lucas in it and get the gears back.

Just my 2 cents on it.

Re: Switching to Synthetic..bad?

Its good stuff, I mean its not better than actually fixing the problem, but it can usually get you by, just be prepared to wait 30 mins for the bottle to empty, its some thick stuff.

Re: Switching to Synthetic..bad?

all these japanese engine claim low milage, and most are true but you have to understand that japan is extremely over populated and traffic sucks so the engine you buy probably has the same amount of hours on it as one from north america, they just didnt go as far.

just cus it only had 40-50 k on it doesn't mean it is a good motor. the rings over time get weak even when they just sit there. my 89' dx with 130,000 on it burned a quart of oil every 200-250 miles. it also has to do with the previous owner too. i know who ever owned my car before me rapped it hard.

Re: Switching to Synthetic..bad?

The reason older motors offen develop leaks and start burning oil after switching to syntheic is because the synthetic cleans the inside of the engine, removing all of the varnish and deposits that are plugging all the holes. I believe this is the study that was refenced earlier about oil filters, http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html .
