OK, one more post on this subject. i fixed the heater core and had the cooling system pressure tested. no problem found, but my wife who is now sensetive to antifreeze kept getting headaches and dizzy when riding in the vehicle, and the carpet kept showing some wet spots (i put down newspaper on the floor to alert to me to problems early).
at this point i decided to tear the interior of the car apart and find the problem. i'm a big guy, 6'2" and technicaly obesse, and it's not easy for me to crawl under the dash and locate a problem like this, but i did it out of love. she loved the vehicle, and i may get laid if i fix it.
after hours of sweating it out on this job, and between repeated trips to the beer cooler, i finaly removed the kick panel (3 screws) and the door threshold strip (4 screws).
now, sure i was on track, i rested in the shade of my favorite tree and savored the moment when i would turn back the carpet to reveal the problem as i sucked down another cold one.
sure enough, there was a pond hiding under there. the heat shield over the transmission hump was totaly saturated and the carpet underlayment was equally soaked. there was even a pool of antifreeze residing in the indents of the floor boards. only the rubber backing on the carpet slowed it's entry into the cabin proper.
problem solved, i grabbed another cold one and retired to the shade of the back porch.
