The N/A Metro has 55 lb.ft. of torque.

And no, the motors aren't on the raged edge of blowing up. Their extremely short cranks are inherently rigid, and the rocker arms actuate the valves directly. No shim and bucket design that will come apart when the valves float. Furthermore, at
8.1:1 compression ratio the piston speeds are rather low at TDC, making the stress on the bearings low. Oh, and the distributor has a boost retard feature. Also, there's a knock sensor (that's right, a knock sensor on a 1987 model!). Not to mention it's multiport fuel injection. And how about that closed deck block? Opps, forgot to mention the hyperutectic pistons that happen to be ceramic coated right from the factory. Hyperutectic, in this case, means these pistons have a higher than usual silcone content which keeps them from expanding excessively under high temperature conditions.

I'm not trying to be a smartass, it just irks me when people diss these cars and engines for being worthless.

Nitrous works. Its cheap too. You just have to hook up a whipping cream can to it and hit the gas. Whatever you do to bump up the power, I might recognize you by the blue-smoke trail from behind as you try to keep the west nile virus from spreading.

Just donīt try to mod it too much, It could harm the engine and structure because the Metro wasnīt desing for modifications in mind, like Civics, etc. A 3cyl engine is delicated and unpowered, and putting more HP extras wonīt really make a diference. Good luck

Re: serious Metro mods

I know you said you'd use the original engine... but for others.. would the speed (!) equipment available for the 4 cyl Sammi fit the 4 cyl Metro engine? I have pumped up my sammi engine and got significantly more hp. I can do 80+ mph, and on a sammi that is like pushing a parachute in front of you. Or something. Lots of wind resistance because of body shape. I have lots bigger tires, and it is raised, with armor underneath so I am heavier too.

My point is that there are lots of speed parts available.

If you want even more out of your Sammi, do the DOHC head swap on it. It's a bolt on. Just gotta use the Swift GT engine wiring harness and computer. The DOHC head should probably get another 15-25 hp out of your sammi head. And you can get some nice headers and a cultus intake manifold for even more power.

Re: serious Metro mods

Hmm.. that's an idea. That would also raise my compression ratio somewhat. I already have the Doug Thorley header. I think, if/when I go to EFI I will use the megasquirt ECM. Cheaper, and hopefully more durable. At least it will be more fun to tinker with. Are you *sure* that head will fit? Seems like I have to find some rt-angle adapter for the distributor, and there is a problem with the headgasket and also with finding a belt that will fit. But it is an interesting thought. For off-road use I'd prolly wanna change the cams. I run the Isky Torquer mid-range cam. It makes a *big* difference.

A complete engine swap to a 8v 1600 would make sense for me as I want to low-end torque off-road and am so tight I squeek when I walk. Instead of swapping to the DOHC engine I mean. The VW diesel swap is interesting also.

My buddy in Ohio builds Megasquirts, and all the additional components. If you want his email, he can hook you up with a ready to go unit, and a laptop pre-loaded with the software.
