Re: Water/alcohol injecton (and why alcohol is better)

Good writeup...I never knew that you couldn't just run a bit of the windshield washer tank and pump. Good to know before I got bored and wasted time, $$, and tapped my plenum.

I do however plan on running propane in the future...depending on my turbo upgrade decision (I'm still flip-flopping between 2 options) But if I go with the larger, I'm going to be running propane so I can really boost on 94 octane pump gas.

I know in general it isn't as popular a choice as alky, but as far as I can tell it seems to be more popular amoung the 3S crowd...

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

Propane is the most over looked power adder and coolent that hasn't had alot of research. It would be much simpler to install. It's also a heck of a lot colder than water or alky, plus it's 110 octane.

Damnit Igovert500, now you've got me thinking, if I could drop my combustion chamber temp down and run more boost or add another 50 shot of spray, Hmmmm
How would you explain it to the guy doing your emission check?

Him: What does your car run on?

You: Well it uses some gasoline, alittle propane, a touch of water with a side of alky and once in awhile it's known to consume large amounts of nitrous when needed.

Re: Water/alcohol injecton (and why alcohol is better)

For water/alky injection what is better, a variable system based on boost pressure or MAF readings?

And Igovert, what two turbo choices are you flip floping on? I like the price and performance of the 13t WRX turbos.

Re: Water/alcohol injecton (and why alcohol is better)

If I may add a bit here

I run water injection in Hyde and I would never modify a boosted car without WI ever again. I run 60% distilled water and 40% methanol.
The only reason to run methanol is as an anti-freeze for those of us in places that get that cold.

Detonation control (affective octane) of water is much great than a water/methanol mix.

In my opinion, I would not run alcohol injection or use methanol as a fuel source. I would prefer having the proper fuel system for my target power level and use WI as (a) safety measure and (b) to allow for a little more agreesive tune. With the current state of my engine, I am using it more for damage control.

Another reason to choose WI over alky injection is that no racing body that I am aware of disallows it. However, several racing organizations (or classes within) do not allow running alcohol.

Just my 2 psi. Happy boosting.

Sounds like a good 2 psi to me. Another happy customer.
It's been around along time and most people think cause it's water wouldn't or doesn't have much value. Tell that to the guys that use it. I swear by it.

200,500 miles engine pushing 24 psi of boost ... I wouldn't try it without race gas and water injection

you have to go boost. The reason is that MAF readings are not really related to boost. Thats why you can have your MAF before your turbocharger and it will still work.

Remember, boost is what creates the heat, not your airflow.

Personally with my new ice water to air intercooler, I don't have to start spraying untill higher boost levels so, I don't think a progressive kit will be any help.

Your right on Hypsi. My setup has a 3 stage W/A setup.
1 stage triggered by a pressure switch, 1 by throttle at wide open micro switch and the other by the nitrous selenoid power. I don't want to flood the engine with large amounts of W/A but want levels needed for different power needs.

I setup a friends car that had a large 2 stage nitrous setup with a 2 stage W/A setup also. It worked super and allowed him to keep his timing set for best power without spray while still maintaining good EGT readings with spray.

Hrrm, well I think I'll be upgrading my turbos before getting an injection system, stock intercoolers are fine for now.
