Now now deak. Newbies need a place to learn, so why not behind a computer screen so they don't have to do to the dealer and get humiliated? (<--Spelling?)

Thumbs down

Yeah, it's important to be nice to Newbies (like me!) but let's be honest, anyone who's not even aware that there are computers involved in just about every aspect of how an engine functions probably shouldn't be driving one, much the less considering mods.

Talking

With that said, can you guys and girls answer these questions for me:

2002 GTI 1.8T Tiptronic 180 HP

Okay, so what's the story with increasing the pathetically slow shift time of the tip? Is there a "tip only" chip by GIAC? How much is it? Is it a permanent chip or can it be taken in and out to avoid detection? Will its effects show up on Diag Comps when I bring my car in to be servcied, if so, will it void my warranty?

I dunno....

Lightbulb Performance mods

Yes, I agree that Tiptronic is not for the avid driver, however we must condone the fact that it DOES decrease shifting times! So, let the guy have his fun, but someone who does not know what or where the computer is on the car shoild do some research before you start dumping money into a warrantied car. I am quite fond of the 1.8T, however you will end up putting alot more into the car than you probably anticipate if it is not all done under a watchful eye. There are a ton of 1.8T's out there, just check around. Be careful as not to void the warranty with all of your mods - it is easy to do. I had a VW before the BMW and VW was very willing to cover warrantied items, take advantage of the warranty.

Good Luck!

I'm sorry, GIAC doesn't offer a chip for the transverse mounted 1.8t yet. They do however offer one for the longitudinal mounted 1.8t in the Passat.
You should email Andrea at [email protected] and ask them when they will release it. Once again, sorry for that.

If i'm not mistaken, UPsolute had a Tiptronic chip with them to to Oschersleben last year, I'll look into it.

Lightbulb Re: My First Car '02 GTI 1.8T

Here is how it all works. If you want a car that you will be able to get a 12.0 second 1/4 mile out of @ 400hp tops, then the 1.8T is definitely the way to go. You will be most likely in the 4.0-4.5 second 0-60mph range after only spending a mere $6,000. If you want to run 10.0's buy a VR6 and plan on spending $12,000 at least on it. In any event, the best upgrade for your car would be to go to goapr.com and buy the APR stealth chip. This chip will take your car to 215/247 hp/torque respectively and it has a stealth mode that makes the VW factory unable to detect it. Thus, maintaining your warranty. You will not be able to just buy the chip and call it quits however. Being that your chip will be running 14-18 lbs of boost opposed to the factory settings of 6-7 lbs of boost, you will need a good diverter valve. This will cool off your turbo and allow it to "blow off some steam"when you shift thus allowing it to function alot more efficiently. Also, I would look into getting a K and N drop in air filter. The P-Flo's and forced induction's make your engine alot louder and can also mess up your mass airflow sensor/meter. I had to replace mine after a month of having a P-flo on it. Being that you will be taking more air in because of the K and N filter you will want a way to get the air out. So I recommend a Supersprint Exhaust. This exhaust will make your car have a stronger exhaust tone but it wont be loud like some of these little Honda Civic's with the huge "coffee can" universal exhausts. Those "coffee can" Exhausts actually end up decreasing your HP because it lets too much exhaust out at one time thus creating a lack in backpressure which is what starts the combustion process up all over again.I hope this helps. If any else needs help my email is [email protected]
