That would be interesting, I remember doing some research on Arpanet back when it was running in its original form and it was so slow it could only support text based pages.

And your right, actually I doubt we will see an 802.11 based internet, being wireless it's always going to be a security nightmare

Katwoman is right......the internet will always be there. Nothing will make it obsolete......if something comes along that is better, it'll probably be based on or around the interent. The possiblity of some idiot making a virus or something to mess up the interent is more likely then it just going under. If it does......none of us will be around to see.

What JD@af made me think is that things get worse before they get better....by mentioning the dark ages......the world could go under then reevolve with a whole new system of technology. We are advacing into dangerous territories of technology. Who knows, the matrix could be real.

Most of that stuff in the last part was added to create more questions.

Ok what the heck are you guys smoking? A internet based on 802.11 that makes no sense. The internet is too diverse for that. All 802.11b can support is 11Mb/s and 802.11a 40Mb/s and ths is the max rate under the best conditions.

Also the range of 802.11 transmisions is very limited. And its aplications are good only for computers close together. If the entire internet would be based on it it would reqiure to fill the etire earth with transmiters every 100 m.

For wireless transmisions in large areas you use other systems beside 802.11. At work we have a microwave transmiter with a 7 miles range line of sight and its usind a completely different transmision standard. And threre are many more transmision standards aproved by the fcc. with way higher range and bandwith.

So 802.11 standard might be good for home aplications but no way as an internet backbone. A true backbone pipeline can suport anywere from 100MB/s to 1Gb/s and more.

So first do your homework and find out how networking works beyond you LAN parties and PC Magazine and then talk.

If the reference library has been superseded by the internet, surely it is just as plausible that a better delivery system could shrink the internet demand in much the same way?

there will surely come a time when the sum total of the world's information will be condensed into a palm - sized, voice activated, multilingual, multifunctional gizmo given away with every ten dollar gas purchase.........

I think Gonthrax is just too caught up with the latest buzzwords. A 802.11 internet makes no sense.

With the advancements being made in technology, and at the rate it's going, something like this would not surprise me.

I think that would be pretty damn cool. Youd be looking through the flyers, and see a coupon thats like "2$ off Know-it-all Organizer. Combined knowledge of the entire planet"

I know id buy one.

Only thing is, it would be kinda depressing if everyone knew everything. There isnt really any point in learning then.

:exasperated: Ok before I start let me say I didn't/don't want to pick any fights here.

Why must every one make things so cut and dry? Think outside the box! For the very reasons that were mentioned by jinushaun and Neutrino the entire internet couldn't be 802.11 however it would be a very good way to destribute it to the enduser.

.... I have done my homework. This is why on the magnetic pin I wear on my shirt when I go to work it says "System's Consultant"

*Edit*
Oh, and before you all jumped to conclusions as to what I was saying and lept forth to flame me for it, I said

Is it the 802.11 type network?
Unless my highschool english teacher lied to me, beleave that means an 802.11 like network... Meaning not the exact thing, but somthing like it.

I started contradicting you because the way you put it sounded like you wanted the internet to be based on 802.11 wich made no sense. And sorry to contradict you again but it would not be a good way to "distribute" to the end user. Maybe to be used by the end user but not to be used by an ISP to distribute. Although maybe I am too picky at your words and you meant something else.

And for the homework attack it was because it sounded like that is all you know. And this is just an observation but you might want to be more explicit in some of the posts so other people won't missunderstand you.

And me to I know what I am talking about because I am a student with my first major in Electronics and Information technology at a major university and have a job as a Sys Admin.

No worries bro, I'm not pissed Just a bit frustrated because usualy I have no problems saying what I mean, but sometimes no matter what I say people missunderstand me

Any how, what I was, and am now, trying to say is that a wireless network from local hubs to the end user will most likely be the next step in the internet. I only say 802.11 because (yes jinuseun) it was the first thing that popped into mind when I thought wireless communication. I'm sure by the time that the internet advances to that stage there will be a much better and more secure transfer protocal out there. But unless handhelds start getting more memory on them, would you really need a T1 to your palm Wait, what am I saying, of course you do! I don't know why, but I'm sure there's a reason
