Mike
I happens to all of us from time to time, as SteveK2003 said why not strip it back with some Brake Fluid and repaint it again.

Yeah,

I wasn’t looking forward to sinking it into brake fluid but it’s now inevitable. I foolishly thought that by painting the trim it might actually hide the white edges that appeared because of the clear – how wrong that theory was. It has actually made it worse. As for masking, I’ve attempted this twice now using Tamiya Masking tape and a brush, and everytime it’s leaked. Now using an airbrush I can lay this tape down, put a very light mist of paint to seal, and it works. Therefore I know this tape can work without leaking. So, no more brush painting window trims. Airbrush from now onwards.

Oh – I don’t need a new body – ha..!!, it’s just the clear coat that messed this one up. I learnt that this stuff is horrid to apply. I’m thinking I might use an airbrush when I get it repainted to clear it, instead of using that horrid TS-13.

So, it’s being stripped, and I learnt that –

Window Trims + masking tape are hard to paint using a brush.
TS-13 clear is bloody horrid stuff to apply

Just a quick question - DOT2 brake fluid is now harder to get then DOT 3 4. DOT 3 or 4 will be OK won’t it? Leave it soaking for 3 – 4 hours and then brush the paint of with an old toothbrush?

Any Brake Fluid is Fine, I would get a big bottle from a Motor Factors which will be a load cheaper than Halfords.
Also get a big Plastic Sandwich box with edge seals to stop spilage
(I got mine from Matalan) you have one in Northampton @ Weedon Road Industrial Estate, Tyne Road

You might find it has to sit for 1-2 days to get it all off, I pop it in before work and try when I get home, if it's still not coming off try again the next morning, If will not hurt to leave for 2-3 weeks as I have sometimes when I forgot.

You can reuse the brake fluid over and over, so keep it for next time and there will be a next time believe us

Thanks HiroBoy.

Take it you visit Northampton every so often then? There is a Matalan on Weeden Road, and a Halfords as well. I’ll nip to the motor store tomorrow and get some brake fluid to get this body stripped.

TBH – I’m surprised I wasn’t stripping my first build, but it went really well. Beginners luck I guess. Wasn’t so lucky this time. I’ve got a Nissan skyline R34 V-Spec on the side, seeing as the under chassis and insides are almost done on this build, I guess I’ll make a start on this, as it looks like this project is taking a backward step. I didn’t want to do this, as whilst I’m starting out I didn’t want to get too many projects on the go. To avoid wasting kits, and to avoid confusing my learning curve.

Ah well, no choice now.

HiroBoy,

Got some DOT 4 fluid from the work's pool car garage guys.. Nice folks gave me 5 ltr of the stuff.. It's now soaking in a sandwich container from matalan, brought on tonight. Just checked and the blue has almost ran off the car body. Mix of small areas of blue, lots of white primer showing, and it's even starting to attack the primer and leaving the plastic.. Lethal stuff to paint, even the guys who gave it to me said watch it on your paint work, as it will eat it away..!! Little did they know I needed it for actually stripping paint..!!

Oh - Got new decals coming from Tamiya Spares UK £3.50 so will replace the one I stuffed up on the wheel and the seatbelt I've just runied..

I'm going to complete this car.. It's now a mission to get it completed..!!

To all that have helped and advised me so far - Thank you..!!

another thing you can try for two tone paint jobs is too lay the mask, then spray some clear, the clear will bleed so when you spray the second color, none will come thru

Re: Impreza WRC 1998 Monte Carlo

Don't worry about brake fluid - just use some oven cleaner! Works much quicker, and much easier to clean off. Last time I used it to strip a friends car, it was about 2 mins of application, and all the paint was gone!

Also, relax about your build - part of the fun of building models is resolving issues like little broken parts, or missing bits etc.

I had a BMW with no decals. A load of fun to paint the propellors freehand.

It's all part of modelling. Relax, and fix the problems as you go...

Are you in the UK?
I ask, as I have yet to find any oven cleaner here which works, like you describe, if you could recomend a specific named products that might help.

I'm in the UK, yes. Just went down to Tesco and got some of the basic decent looking oven cleaner. Can't recall the make as such, but think it was Mr Muscle or something (less than £2 for a can...)

I used DOT 4 brake fluid and all the paint is now gone, including the primer..!! Mr Muscle is what used to strip acrylic, works fine. Leave it to foam up, when foam has gone wash the paint off.

My build is going OK. Got the underside done, just waiting for new decals to arrive from Tamiya spares, then I'll build the inside etc.. I can re-prime the body tonight - if I can get some heat in the garage. It's bloody cold here tonight..!!

Some more progress on the (what I'm now calling) the ill fated Impreza. The body is now primed white, after I had to strip it back to plastic due to a mishap with clear (TS-13), now ready for a coat of silver then top colour. The underbody is all done, apart from the steering rod. Replacement on the way. Inside all painted - it's now drying. Rollcage done, and seats all done. Pic of some of the inside progress. Looks a lot better IRL, so what can I say. Still can't take pictures very well.

New decals came today, so got the seats completed and the wheels. Will put the rollcage in tomorrow when dry, and then it's just the body to go..!!

Ok - This is now at a stage where I'm attempting to get better with clear coat, and BETTER with taking photos.

I've done some more, and I hope if anyone is still looking at the build can see the detail better now that I'm attempting to take better pics. The body is now re-painted, after I had to strip it. The clearcoat went on 1 hour after the final wet coat of mica blue. Light costs this time, and it's VERY glossy. I see no need to even polish it. It looks wet, but it's now dry. Well it's touch dry.

The dash is still primer, no XF 53 in the local hobby shop. hasn't been for a few days now. But the rest is now dry fitted, apart from the seats. I'm VERY happy with the seats, as the decals look good. Next time I willl use PE belts, but this is my first rally car.

Here are the updated pics, with better body paint job, and more care being taken to make this a good build.

Looks great so far. I wouldn't even clear-coat it is the paint looks good. Just paint the trim, apply the decals, and call it good.
