Well I think its a good idea. I am a victim of being hit by someone talking on a cell phone.

But here in NY its hardly enforced. Shoot, I even seen a cop driving while on a cell phone.

true, my dad is the worst, he ate a BBQ chicken while he was steering with his knees he does it all the time.

And CB, and UHF radios are just as bad as cell phones, although, the differance is, you don't have to have it up to your ear to hear the person you're talking to, if you're talking to someone at all.

I don't understand HOW the hell you can have a decent conversation while driving..and on the cell phone.

OR...even with a passenger, yacking away.... Nothing like a passenger ASKING a question WHILE your merging onto a 65MPH highway.

Seriously though, any distraction behind the wheel will translate into a either an over-reaction....or NO reaction at all.

The best is when you see them yacking while driving, and they make OVER judgement responses to a traffic situation. I personally have a relaxed brain (think balboa lol) and can hardly talk to people in my car (passengers) while i'm driving.

I usually just crank my subs :-) For some reason, loud music makes me....drive better...

I agree with everyone here who thinks cell phones should be banned while driving. Congress is considering passing a bill that would ban teens from driving and talking, to which I say yes. But you have to think: how will cops know if you are a teen? They would have to pull EVERYBODY over to find out if they are underage. So I think they should change the bill from banning teens to banning everyone. Teens aren't the only ones out there who cause accidents and drive recklessly because of cell phones. Nobody should be allowed to use their cell phone while driving, NOBODY!!!! Any of you who think you can drive safely and use your cell phone are lying to yourselves. You think you're okay, but you really are just pissing a lot of people off while you yack away about absolutley nothing that would be more important than concentrating on the road. Hang up and drive, America!!!!

^ I agree. But let me ask this also, while here in NY they ban hand held cell phones while driving, they do allow you talking on the cell phone providing its with those hands free talking devices. So now they have both hands on the wheel (or one hand if you use the other on the shifter in a manual vehicle) yet they are still yapping away.

What I do not get is what can it be so dog gone important to talk about on the phone while driving that it can't possibly wait until you get to your destination or at least pull over.

Instead of focusing all your attention towards someone with a cell phone just so you can watch as you hope they slightly swerve or something so you can be pissed off at them, why don't you just focus on driving? I'm sure that while you are paying more attention to them instead of the road, you have delayed reactions too.

Besides that... why do you think its impossible to pay attention to the road if I just have one hand by my ear? The placement of your hand does not affect thinking processes. If I have a passenger in my car, should I not be allowed to talk to them? It doesnt matter what you get rid of, stupid drivers will not be able to drive better with or without a cell phone. Take away their cell phone, and they will put on make up, change a cd, eat breakfast, brush their teeth (Ive seen it), tie their shoes, put on clothes, pick their nose, fix their hair, change the station, roll down the window, dig around in the glovebox, race, change lanes without looking or signaling, daydream, fall asleep..... And besides that, people who cant drive, CANT DRIVE. People who can drive, CAN DRIVE. If you are a responsible person, who knows how to drive, then you realize if your abilities are affected by conversation.

And for those of you who think that you know everything.... you are just lying to yourselves. You don't know that nobody on Earth is capable of driving while holding a conversation. How many people can play a professional sport? Not many people can do that. But just because its really fuckin hard, doesnt mean nobody can do it. Just because you cant do it, and just because most people who were involved in this "scientific study" cant do it, doesn't mean that I can't. You are ignorant if you think that theres nobody who can do it. It is straight up ignorant. You are wrong to say that I can't drive better than you while Im on a cell phone. I guarantee I have better reactions than most people do even when they arent on a cell phone. Im sorry, but thats just how it is. Do I think everybody can do it? Hell no. But do I think I know everything... no. But I know myself, and my own abilities. There are people who can do things I am not capable of, and I am capable of things that other people are not. You folks who get a tightened up butt hole when you see anybody on a cell phone need to loosen up. Pay attention to the road, stop watching the other driver, because that makes you just as irresponsible as you are accusing them of being.

Like I said, (again) I am all for the banning of cell phones while driving. I know that some people just are not capable of it, and should not be doing it. But me on the other hand, I know that I can do it, and pay attention to the road, and watch for cops enough that I will never get caught. When I see somebody pull over to answer a cell phone, I feel bad for them... they really can't do 2 things at once? Oh well, at least they are smart enough to know that. But when I see somebody driving near me, while on the phone, I don't get pissed, because I know, maybe they are one of the blessed individuals who is capable of talking while paying attention to something else, just like me. And if they aren't, that's okay because I am already aware of them, so if they are driving unsafely, then I will be able to avoid them.

This whole argument is all based on insecurities. Its also been proven through "scientific study" that people worry more about things they are not confident in doing themselves.

Have you never had something important to talk about while you were on your way to somewhere important? Give me a break!!! And besides that, if somebody like me is capable of driving better than you even while on a cell phone, it doesnt matter if it is important or not. It's no big deal. Lots of stuff causes car accidents, and I guarantee that if you take away the cell phones, there wont be less accidents, there will just be less accidents where they know what caused it.

Ban cell phones while driving. Im all for it. But when you tell me that I can't do it safely, you are wrong.

They discourage driving while talking on your phone here in Virginia. Im am not lying about this though. I have passed 12 cops in 3 days and 8 out of that 12 were talking on cell phones. One I confirmed because I was stopped beside him at a light. WTF. Yeah they set a good example on safe driving.

I think alot of people are distracted by cell phones while driving. I think alot more people are just crappy drivers in general. But I do not think that the federal government has a right to tell me when and where I can talk on MY phone. MY phone, in MY car, driving on roads I helped pay for. I'm sure some will be quick to label me something like a "selfish bastard" but I really don't care. The less control the government has over my life the better. I can make my own desicions thanks.
