Smart plus accident with any other vehicle on the road equals one dead Smart driver. I don't care what kind of safety features the ugly little bastard has, hell, if I broadsided that thing in a freaking Cooper, I can't see any way someone would walk away from that thing alive. I can't imagine the carnage if it got plugged by a Voyager or an SUV. I think it'll be very interesting to see the real life accident survivability statistics in these things in a couple years, not the 'lab' numbers we're getting right now.
The only time a Smart will be safe is when everyone else is driving a Smart.

The truth of the matter is, that aside from looks the Trabant was a very, very, good car (twenty five years ago). Of course, even today I'd take a Trabant over a Smart.

The Trabant IS a good car!:-)
I drove 2 years this car ( over 20 Years old and with 80.000miles of the Speedometer ) to the University. Day per Day over 100miles on the Autobahn ( Motorway ).
Day per Day full Speed and maximum RPM over Hours ( the Car has only 26hp! ), no Maintenance, no Care, NO MERCY! And? No Problems!!!:-)

The worst modern car? I know it's not an original response, but the Hummer H2 is really just a disappointment. I just hate the fact that it doesn't excel in the one area that made the H1 famous: off-road capability. The thing was built for the bling-bling crowd and it shows. Go back to the drawing boards, GM, I know you can do better.

Yes and No! The SMART make this "Stunt" by a very low Speed. So slow that normal cars have no problems! The question is not - the car stood on the back OR flipped over. The question is ( at the same speed! ) - the car stood on the back OR have no Problems!
The car is short, high and relatively narrow and the best safety engineering ( ABS, ESP, EDS, ASR or so ) cannot change the Physics!

tht equates to saying a lotus elise is a bad car cos you can't fit granny AND 6 bags of shopping in it at the same time, it's suspension is a bit stiff and the insurance is a bit high.

You're a moron, you'd probably say the same thing about the little Mercedes Benz A Class, wouldn't you? Ask the Melbourne family who got hit head on in thier A Class by a car going 150 km/h and escaped with a few bruises.

The Smart isn't much heavier and uses the same "Safety cell" structure as the A Class, please go get a clue about engineering before you speak again. PLEASE!


And yes that picture of the smart on it's backside is incredibly "Welcome to 1998" But trust me, Daimler-Benz learnt from the whole A Class rollover debacle.
