Re: Colored Tires.....

true, but it's hard to tell whether or not this is a good product or not without it even being in production yet...none of us have first-hand reviews - so i guess we'll wait and see if they actually do release and start selling the tires

Grounding straps are woven metal strands that hang down from a vehicle's body or chassis and touch the ground. They neutralize any static discharge that builds up when the vehicle is in motion. These are quite common on semis, jacked-up trucks (when it owner isn't a total idiot), and not so uncommon on jeeps or any vehicle with high-friction (offroad) tires. You know you need one if, when you get out of your car, you get "zapped" when you touch metal as you are standing up. I think the warning about needing the grounding strap is just an indication that the rubber used in the tires (assuming the product is real) generates more of a static charge. This isn't necessarily bad or good, just different.
I thought grounding straps leveled out the ground state between the chasis, engine block, and battery. http://members.shaw.ca/dsm.1000q/Eng...roundstrap.htm

On another note, the static electricity that zaps you when you touch metal as your getting out of your car is usually built up from your butt sliding across the fabric of your seats. Replacing the seats with leather, or touching the keys in the ignition as your get out would fix that.

different kind of grounding straps next time you are behind a school bus, or a large truck, look down between the wheels- normally attached to the axle, you should see either a metal braid or chains- these are grounding the vehicle's body and chassis to earth. the static you feel isn't from the seats (okay, there might be a small amount of incidental static, but not much) but from your vehicle "rubbing" the road while you drive. i can't find anything to link to that explains this phenomenon, but it does happen, believe me!

the vast majority of gas pump fires are caused by static discharges against the body of the car.

wait, wiki's got something.

edit: hunh, looks like some of the external links think the car seat thing too... it could affect the static charge, possibly... there is still a static charge issue between the car body and earth-ground, though. meh.

You know the chains thing makes perfect sense. I bet the Govt. mandates that all big rigs, and busses have to drag em down the road, so it F's up the road, so we have to shell out more taxes to the state to pay for it, just so they can say "The Fed's wont subsidize it so we will just have to keep the money for ourselves". **Shakes fist in anger** lol.

Re: Colored Tires.....

heh... i seriously bitched this year about the cost of my tags... i pay 20 bucks more for the "privelidge" of living within city limits and being harrassed by more cops. i (we) should get a discount for NOT driving a big-assed heavy vehicle with off-road tires that tear up the road.

comon, i drive a 2400lb vehicle with road tires... how much damage am i doing again, compared to some freakin jacked-up truck, or a ford excessive?
