Especially going down a rocky hill side, huh? I almost had a guy with ABS rear end me once cuz he just couldn't stop.

As for the original post, I agree that it is the master cylinder. The seals inside get worn and lose the ability to keep the fluid under pressure.

rear brakes

The self adjusters on the rear brakes only work when you are backing up and apply the brakes.
So if you back up and don't use the brakes but then put it in forward gear, you don't get the self adjust.
You need to use the brakes a number of times to get it done as the adjustment amount is small.
I had to adjust my driving habits to take care of this. back up and apply the brakes crisply. This took care of it.

i had a 93 chevy with the same problem. the dealership replaced the master cylinder, front pads and rotors, rear shoes and hardware. i get the truck back and still have long pedal stroke, so i take it back and complain. they bled the entire brake system again and still not any better. even though every thing was new. then they tell it must be the rear drums even though they measured out fine, so they put new drums on they truck. i get truck back and still have a lousy pedal. i ask them does any one test drive these things before they give the truck back. they tell me that the truck is just that way and that i will just have to put up with it . wrong answer. i called gm and bitched. it turns out that the problem was the rear anti-lock valve was bypassing just slightly , but never triggered the brale light. after a lot of bitching they reimberced my the cost of the labour, i still had to pay for a lot of parts i didn't need.

Very interesting post, pies. I have done all these things too with same results. Is the rear anti-lock valve hard to replace, does anyone know? I'll do it myself so long as it does not involve some complicated ABS specialty tools.

Great info

Re: 95z71 brakes Advice

i don't know how hard it is to replace. the sad part of this whole problem was that i am a mechanic myself. but i had a disk removed in my lower back when this problem started. i was so tee'd of at gm and i couldn't really check if and what work they really did. i sold the truck shortly after and got a good deal on a 2000 chev. now i wish i had my 1993 back.

mushy brakes

I have an 88 c-1500. I just replaced all of the rear braking hardware. Everything. My brakes weren't that mushy before I did the replacement but after they got mushier. I took it to a brake shop and they bled the brakes and told me that those series trucks had difficulty getting all of the air out of the lines.

Re: 95z71 brakes Advice

I noiced whene I adjusted my rear brakes that the spur on the "self adjuster" was worn I'm sure if I replace it I will not have a soft pedal at least for quite a while
