i was not aware of the 401 Gremlin as a street car. i thought it was like the SS/AMX, for dragstrip only. i knew they put the 304 in the Gremlin for us regular people. i would like to know more about it. thanks, matt FREEDOM=AMC |

Re: forgotten muscle
I'll have to find the rest of the info I have on it, It was only available one year and had to be special ordered. It was essectially a drag car that was for sale to the public.
I wouldnt mind dropping a 401 in my gremlin, but I think the twin turbo 258 will be suficient.

it was not built in the AMC plant like the Hurst SC/rambler was. Randall Rambler of Mesa,Arizona was taking out the 304 and putting in the 401 at the dealership. he would put on anything you wanted and they were very fast with a stock 401. i see a time here of 13.22 at 105.76 mph ! ! ! (i would like to have one). there was only a hand full built. the Hurst SC/rambler was (built in house,at AMC) and Hurst really did nomore then put in the shifter and put their name on the car. everything else was stock AMC stuff. i think your twin turbo 258 will be more then enough. thanks, matt |

There was a picture of Mr Randell standing next to 30 401 crate motors that AMC sent him to create the 401-XR Gremlin. The project received semi official blessing from AMC, 20 401-XRs were completed in 1972-74 period.
I would say the very early Firebirds also don't get the attention they deserve. The 67s/68s get overlooked with all the attention given to the Camaro and Chevelle. Also emphasis is placed on the Trans Am, but the plainer Ram Air 400s were pretty good. Not the most horsepower, but a goodly amount of torque. 67' Firebird 326 67' Firebird 400 |

Studebakers?
I noticed that Studebakers are a little neglected around here
. All '63 and '64 Lark, Avanti and Hawk models were available with Paxton superchargers. A few Avanti's even left the plant with R/3 engines. 335 HP (fudged).
