Now I just don't agree with that...I didn't even look at names when I made my choices. I let the models speak for themselves. And boy, was that tough!

I'll agree with that. Its kinda like a popularity contest. All of us have models that come out really great, and sometimes really shitty.

EDIT: I finally figured out how to word this right: Okay, some (okay, alot...bah!) are rushed (I'm a tad bit impatient), or messed up towards the end. But, when I set down, take my time, and do actually try to do my best, they normally come out pretty well. Especially this years AFMOTY entrant, my Jeep. NOT voting for me, or anyone else for that matter, because my or there other models are shitty isnt right.

Heres a voting tip: The first thing i did to help me narrow my votes down was pic my top favorites, by quickly looking at each picture.. This was easy, as it was a high number, 6 or 8, or so. For you it could be 15, or more. Then I closely look at each picture, and make mental notes of EVERY mistake that i can pickup with just glancing at it.. Does the bumper fit straight, or is the window trim painted straight, or is it even there?!. That should narrow it down further. This cut my 6 or 8 right in half. Then i look at each pic carefully and note EVERY SINGLE mistake. Do the tires look right on the rims (too skinny, wide, etc), look at the shine of paint, see if the panel lines are there, if there too dark and or bright.. by now you should be to 3, or keep repeating these steps. NOT ONCE did I look at the usernames untill it was time to vote.

i agree. however i did look at the names as i scrolled down but i didnt let that play into the voting process. i followed much the same procedure in narrowing down my choices

An idea for next AFMOTY could be to leave the members name off the pic and just have a number

Some very strong contenders this year, a difficult choice.

Re: AFMOTY-04 Contest Photos

That's a nice idea Warren, but on the other hand, how big will the chance be that someone around here that votes, has never seen Hiro's Skyline, or Rallyraiders Murcie? Some of the models, are so known, that it doesn't matter if the name comes with it or not... The only way to make sure that nobody knows which model comes with what person is to forbid showing any pics in a thread or somewhere around the net before the contest is over. And I don't know if that is such a good idea, and even more, if it will work...
Besides that, in some models you can see the hand of the builder anyway...

My final 5 were so tough that I found myself critiquing the photography!

I've had a hand in organizing a few local car shows, and I've learned that it's sometimes better to have two contests running: "best in show" and "people's choice." For the best in show award, there are 5-7 pre-chosen judges (who of course have not entered a car in the show) who go over EVERY aspect of the car. Does it have the correct carb? Is the paint correct to date? They go by set criteria, add up the points, and name best in show. Then there are the people's choice awards, where spectators are allowed one vote for their favorite car at the show. This seems to keep the car owners and the spectators both happy. I bet a setup like this would work for next year's contest. Also, leaving off the builder's name and giving people only one vote would help a little to spread the votes out.

Re: AFMOTY-04 Contest Photos

Exactly which pics or links aren't working for you Bob? I just checked and everything is working fine for me (took quite a while to download too on dial-up). So the AF side of things looks to be okay. Could it be something at your end, like your browser or firewall?
