I don't agree. The first and last vehicle that I had purchased new was an '87 Mustang. Since then, I only buy used. (I like to let someone else take the initial beating) I started using Mobil 1 on my wife's cars, as by the time she let me know she was due for an oil change, she was already way overdue. The extra cost is well worth it as the change intervals are extended. I've had nothing but good luck with it, and have also used it in all of my used vehicles. Switching to synthetic on engines that have been previously using petroleum based oil DOES NOT cause it to start leaking or burning oil. However, competent engine builders and manufacturers will tell you NOT to use synthetic in a brand new engine. It is not the rubber seals that they are concerned with, it is the sealing of the piston rings to the cylinder walls. Synthetic is too slippery to properly break in a fresh engine, and using it right from brand new can cause the rings never to properly seal resulting in oil use.

When I advertise cars when we are done with them, I make sure people know the oil change information. We usually sell locally at about 130k, and have had repeat buyers, as our used cars sometimes make it well over 300k.

So if you should not use it from new then why doesn't the Vette burn up their engines? They start with synthetic? I've never heard of the "Do not use from new" theory. Synthetic is more consistant sized, more pure, less additives, but ruin rings & seals??????

Sorry that this post is about the Non SS 1500 LQ9.... Start a new thread if that is what you want to rehash.....

Well if you want a little better gas miledge id chip it along wiht a high flow exhaust system and a green air filter never heard of it its only the best filter you can buy comes with a life time warantee along with a cleaning kit and is guaranteed to never wear out Heres a link for your truck this filter should give you about 12 horse power by itself add it to a chip and exhaust and you just gave your truck 40 more tire killing horses and about 2-3 miles per gallon http://www.greenfilterusa.com/vehicl...make=Silverado I put green in my truck and i could feel the difference and its a stock filter replacment the air box on your truck pulls the air in from outside the engine compartment theres no need to put in another cold air intake you already have one

Mobil 1 can be used from the start. Some manufacturers even put syntheric in at the factory. My truck had 600 miles on it when I did the first oil change. I went directly to Mobil (used by a heck of a lot of NASCAR drivers and those engines run over a 100 grand each).

Re: 345 hp Vortec 6000 LQ9 2004 Silverado 1500 RWD extended cab

I think this thread said something at the start with miledge and performance. I can sum it up to this:

2002 Silverado LT, X-cab, 5.3 L engine: $25,500
Flowmaster exhaust: $350
K&N FIPK Cold Air Intake: $195
Hypertech tune: $300
Sucking the headlights out of a Honda off the line on 16th St onto Hwy 160 coming out of midtown Sacramento at 11:30 at night while still getting over 17 mpg: PRICELESS!!!

Use whatever you want in your new engine. You'll be fine. However, it is far from myth that natural oil lubricants help seat the rings faster and tighter. New rings need to "wear" somewhat initially to conform to the cylinder walls. I prefer to use the proven method of natural oil for the first 500-1000 miles in any internal combustion engine that I own, then switching to full synthetic. It is a common topic on snowmobile, boating and motorcycle forums as well.

Synthetic oils used from the start does not "burn up" the engine. Probably the worst it could do is allow slightly more oil use over the life of the engine. It is true that the Vettes come with synthetic from the factory. However, this even worries some of the Vette owners. Here's a discussion from a Vette forum on the synthetic subject...

Type in a search like "break in oil" on the internet and all sorts of things come up on the controversial subject.

Good point! Everyone's got their own opinion, and that's what forums are for.

Usually if you use anything better than Dawn dish soap in your crankcase, you'll be ok.
