If your Check engine light is on, it probablly wont hurt the car too drive, but I would first have it scanned at autozone, The first thing I would check is the Mass air flow sensor, if it has not ever had a new one it should be due. also gas cap 3 clicks! bottom line is there are around 200 diffrent things that can set that light off. So you need to get it scanned to find the real problem.

Aha, the notorious MK4 Jetta Engine Light problem...

It's your O2 sensor. Get it replaced and the light should go away. As for the transmission, if it's automatic you should get the CPU reworked since it's usually dumber than a rock. Automatic transmissions in MK4 Jettas like to slip and shift violently at times because they're so dumb.

I had the same problem in my Jetta and the light went off once I started it after the sensor was replaced.

Heh heh. Don't you hate those cupholders? Worst design ever.

Arrgh. My bad.

It's actually the Mass Airflow Sensor. This is the price I pay for a crapload of caffeine combined with fast fingers on the keyboard... God I need to sleep...

I also failed to notice that someone already told you that before I did. Don't blame me! It was on the second page already, but my computer kept freezing halfway down that guy's list of problem codes...dunno why. I should have just hit page 2 and not talked at all. Whatever. I'm going to bed.

Re: check engine lihgt problem

My 96 Jetta GLS has an engine light on. All it needed was ne spark plugs. Also, the elec. code insert is at the ashtray (is on the 96) anyway. Just remove the astray and pull back the little black plastic piece to the side. Take it into a shop, and they plug it in and tell you which out of the above 1000 problems it is. I'll bet spark plugs!

A check engine light can come on if there is a fault stored in the transmission control module.

Re: check engine lihgt problem

Would anyone by any chance know what to do to actually fix a P0170 and P1104 check engine code? I'm not sure, but my friend and I were thinking the P1104 code means I need to replace my MAF sensor... Any ideas?

Question Re: check engine lihgt problem

I have a P0441 Evap emission control system purge flow fault, I am not sure what this is but I cannot figure it out? If you have the same code what did you do to fix the problem? I have a 99 Jetta new body style V6

Re: check engine lihgt problem

HAve '99 vw jetta manual that cuts out at 20 mph or approx 2800 rpm. idles rough and at high rev in idle the gas again cuts out at about 8000 rpm and catches back again once throttle is let up. Can only really drive 15-20 mph before it jerks suddenly and stops getting fuel and then the throttle needs to be let up again. if it is held down i get nothing. Codes pulled read p1580 (vehicle speed or idle speed control, throttle actuator b1 malfunction) and p0103 MAF A circuit high input. could this be a throttle valve sticking or throttle body in need of clean or something like a MAF sensor problem needing a reset or being just plain shot?
