Re: Trade my 240sx HICAS 1991

basically hicas steers the back wheels the other direction of the front wheels when cornering, lane changes etc. which makes for a smoother turn, but not that great for drifiting (although dorikin tsuchiya drifts w/that stuff on a gt-r, but then again he can drift a wheelbarrow if he wanted to). There is a thing called a hicas cancel rod you can put on your car. I'm japanese so i can read these links, maybe you can use one of those internet translation websites to read up. http://history.nissan.co.jp/SILVIA/9901/mechanism.html and http://www.t-get.com/003_h-c.htm
I'll be more than happy to translate the whole thing if you want, but i'm at work right now so it'll be later.

Re: Trade my 240sx HICAS 1991

god... this is one ugly thread. I'm sorry to hear about your theft accident, teamexcessive. i gotta agree w/ some of the guys... what you have now is capable of many feats... maybe you could read around this forum to learn about it a little before you decide to get rid of it. It's your car so you do what you wanna do with it. I got nothing against Civics, but i gotta tell ya... driving is much more enjoyable with a RWD.

The hicas system is basically a four wheel steering system. The rear tires will slightly change rotation speeds/angles to assist the cornering of the vehicle. Hence, this system won't allow you to drift. okay let me rephrase that... it won't allow you to execute drifts as easily/nicely as with a 240 w/o HICAS. Of course, if you're (for some reason) into gripping with the 240sx the HICAS system will be something good to have. The downside is when you have to start fixing/repairing your car. Only certain parts can be used to fix cars with HICAS and they don't come around too often or cheap.

Also, i don't think there is a convenient way to disable the HICAS that easily. If it is possible, there would be more to it than just a flip of a switch. You could read around for it though.. i'm sure there are creative people out there who have attempted it before. i'm no expert... so ask around. that's just my 2 cents. g luck

-edit-
ok someone got to it before me... must've been taking too long typing. haha... ignore my post in that case...

Re: Trade my 240sx HICAS 1991

I have a feeling there might be problems w/some coilovers not fitting when there is hicas. I know when I was searching for arms and other suspension stuff, they specifically stated use w/out hicas. So I'm guessing depending on the coilover it might get in the way w/hicas equipment (i'm not sure what part it would get in the way of though). Your best bet would be to call the store and ask them before buying. If you have trouble remembering what hicas is, it stands for high capacity active suspention which make sense b/c the suspension is all actively moving when you turn.

Re: Trade my 240sx HICAS 1991

yea i needed shocks as well since mine were horrible when i first got the car. I got KYB's and they fit nicely. once you decide to get coil-overs... then at that point you might want to look into what you can and can't get depending on if you have HICAS or not.

if you want new suspension, figure out what kind of driving you want to do and that'll tell you what company to go with. you can have separate shocks and springs, or coilovers. you're saying you have obx coilovers with kyb shocks.. now, to do this you have to tear the obx's apart and customize the spring part of the coilover but even then, the rest of it won't work properly. you either have kyb's with a certain kind of spring or the obx coilovers. if you have the obx coilovers then i don't know what to say cause i know nothing of them..

HICAS simply put, is a system that turns your rear wheels the opposite way of the front once they've had a certain amount of pressure put on them from turning (it won't work well doing small slow turns in a parking lot. you need to take an off ramp really quickly to REALLY feel it) if you look from the ass end of your car towards the diff, you'll see a module smaller than a pop can.. if you don't,then you don't have HICAS.
SO, if you're taking a turn and enough pressure is being put on the outside wheel, the hicas sensor will recognize this and turn both wheels enough so that your turn radius decreases and your car will want to be accelerated through the turn. thats the best i can do. i'm not sure its completely correct but thats the idea.. go drive your car around and take really tight, quick turns, then go drive a civic (with or without coilovers) and see how they compare. THAT is one of the things that makes the 240 so unique.. the other thing is the engine.. its a 2.4L. that displacement isn't found on too many cars in that class, especially built with so much torque.. yeah, there's the Z24's but they're FWD and are built to be economical.. so the final thing, is that its RWD. go try to find another RWD car with that kind of handling and power. i'll see you when pigs fly.

Re: Trade my 240sx HICAS 1991

no i don't have HICAS on my 240. it's a base model so it doesn't have ABS either. Along with cruise control and all that fancy stuff. All in all, i like it better since the car is 'more simple' so it's easy to modify and parts won't be a bitch.

Still, i sorta wish i had power locks. It's a pain to unlock my door and then reach over to unlock the passenger side. XP i know the 240's distributed in my year never came w/ it but they sell power locks that you can install yourself. oh and it does add about 5 horsepower... LOLz.

thats more of a those cheap ass coilover sleeve types not being compatibly with a stock shock body, it probably needs a little modification.

I've HEARD you can pull a fuse out and it will knock out the hicas system, don't know if this is true though.

dude...did you read the thread??? its a 4-wheel steering system that helps with cornering at high speeds. it is electronically controlled to tell the rear wheels turn like 3 degrees each direction.
