would you have any methodical approach to diagnosing the exact sensor that is causing my dilemma? i certainly do not wish to have to take my car to a place that had an obd1 tool, ecause they are hella expensive. it seems like trying to find a needle in a haystack to me. if you have any experience or memories of a time when a sensor was out of comission but youre cel was not poppin up please, please lemme kno

by the way i really like u'r ride. i just took notice of it. i luv 5th gen hatches. anyway, as for checkin for the sensor, i really couldn't tell u yet. give us a REALLY detailed description of ur idle, revlimit, and VTEC problem, and i'll see wut i can make of it.

well i bought the car about a month ago at which time it was redlining at 6k, but did not have the idle problem, now my idle is getting worse and worse by the day. in fact, this past week after hard driving when i turn my car off then try to turn it ack on it wont start and I have to pull my ecu+backup fuses and then start again, pretty embarassing to have such a pretty car but to have to ghetto rig and fool my computer into thinking that everything is status quo to get it to even turn on. as for my idle, if is getting worse and worse now, it doesnt just flutter from 14-1800 while cold and even warm, but now it is fluttering regardless of hot warm my car is and its really not healthy, usually when it gets warmer it flutters from 500-1000 really unhealthily, if thats an acceptable answer. sometimes my car only revvs up to 5500 other times itll make it to 6200 in second but arely 6k in the other gears. hmm, the problem is getting worse and worse so im praying that it is a sensor that is slowly going out and not a faulty ring or something internal and difficult to just do a bolt on swap. as for other aspects to describe.. the vtec does not work and i am not gettin any vtec related codes nor any at all for that matter. i was getting 1 and 43 ut i put in a new o2 sensor and that was all it took to fix that, i was hoping it was what was retarding my car. i still have enough torque to keep up with b16's neck and neck till third gear, ut it just doesnt feel right at all. no vtec and no codes the last way any honda enthusiast wants to wake up in the morning

well it sounds like it might be u'r IAC (or FIC) going. Idle Air Control, Fast Idle Control. It could be in need of a good cleaning and thats all, or it might be dying. also, it could be "related" to the no VTEC. maybe a wire got severed, and the IAC (FIC) is next in line to get cut. This sounds like it's a very tricky one to figure out. Also, could be an ATS (Air Temp Sensor) The last q i have in this would be, did this start after anything u did? tune up, mod, cleaning? either immediately or a little while after. because if so, then mostlikely that's the source of the problem. even as simple as putting in new spark plugs, can cause problems. so if there was anything u changed before u got idle issues, then that's a good place to start. the only thing i can think of VTEC, since u said it is hooked up, is either; run completely new wires right from the ECU all the way to the VTEC solenoid itself, or get another solenoid and swap it out. i wish u the best of luck w/ this. i know how it is to not have VTEC, i'm missing it myself right now.

no it did not start after any mod i did ecause i have done all sorta of interior mods lately ut nothing under the hood. I know my vtec solenoid is getting power and has the right resistance, maye that lil filter in the solenoid valve itself is clogged. the lack of vtec is really puzzling, with the early redline. i should really try a different ecu. can i try the p30 computer out of my dohc vtec on my single cam vtec ?

honestly, i don't know if it would work. it might, because a pg7 out of a DOHC integra, works on a SOHC civic motor, so u just might be able to do it, as long as they r the same OBD. but i'm not makin any promises. call the honda dealer and aska tech guy if it would. they might know.

okay so i took out my p28 and put in the p72 off of my b16 delsol and i was ale to hit 7k instead of 6k, but the knock sensor made my cel come on and put my car in safe mode. so i think my lack of vtec and early redline was maybe ecause my p28 is funky or something? do all p28's emit vtec ?

Those revs limits don't sound right.

A P28 cuts fuel at 7500

A P72 cuts fuel at 8200

And also, that knock sensor won't put it in safe mode. I have a PR3 OBD1 on my Z6, I get the CEL, but I get VTEC, and can rev to 8400.(JDM OBD1 B16 redline higher than GSR).

yeah the P28 is the 92-95 Civic EX/Si ECU. it takes care of VTEC. sounds to me like u do have a bad ECU. it is possible. I have one that i won't be using, and my bro might not be using for a long while. i can't promise it will work, but i bought it working, so i don't see y it wouldn't. make me an offer and if it sounds fair, i might be able to throw it u'r way if he doesn't want to hang on to it.

well technically when i put the p72 in my car i never redlined it, it seemed as if maye my vtec wasnt working because the higher the rpms got the slower it accelerated, it was as if the alternate cams were not kicking in. with the p28 rev limiter actually kicks in at 6100 or so, though the gauges go up to 7200. with the p72 it passed 7k and though rev limiter didnt kick in and make my engine bounce like an amateur driver, just it gets really wimpy and the accelereration literally stops, at which point i shifted because i was scared that maybe my tach is off and i was over revving it to 8300 im not 100% sure that my vtec that my vtec works because im so used to dohc vtec that this single cam vtec is unnoticeale if at all present. i d ont expect to feel it, I just expect to hear those extra valves opening from my exhaust
