The distibutor cap houses the contacts that the rotor sends electricity to to get to each wire. Over time these contact wear ... just like your rotor does ... just like the plugs do ... just like the wires do.

I thought you meant oil/radiator cap. Wasn't sure that that's what you meant by cap. I guess I should change that on my car.
