I wouldn't go more than 20 miles on the line. From my experience, it always seems to be about 1.5-2 gallons left when I filled up my old civic when it was sitting on the red line. Should give you about another 40-60 miles, but I still wouldn't trust it to go that far, so 20 miles is what I say.

Yeah, 20 miles has always been a safe bet when I hit empty. I can always hit 300 miles on a tank before I have to fill up.

Re: Recalibrating Gas Needle... annoying...

^^werd, 20 miles should be enough to get you to a gas station no matter where you are. Unless you are on highway 26 going to WSU and there is a stretch of about 120 miles of nothingness. Good thing my car get's close to 400 miles when it's on the freeway/highway for the entire tank.

i usually tank up my '96 at about 300 miles on the odometer, or before long trips, etc... i know i can go almost 400 miles on my 11.1 gal tank on the highway, but i'll find a place as soon as i see my "glow worm" aka gas light, come on. My car is the first i've seen where the light is a dimmer, it comes on a little, and gets brighter, rather then just on or off.

wierd.

Hmm, interesting...that would be a good idea for all OEM's to do. A low on gas light that gets brighter as goes closer to empty.

what would be nice, would be if it glowed from dim to on, and then started blinking when it hit the last 1/2 gallon, as a "OMFG dude you're almost out of gas!" alert.
