Basically you should do research on the laws where you live, since it varies state to state or area counties. In california the exhaust noise limit is 92 db. So you can have aftermarket exhaust but at proper noise level. If it's a noise issue, just buy a db tester at radioshack and have another cop measure it and endorse it as legal, as featured in the september issue of SuperStreet.

the tester is not chump change however they said it would come in handy in future tickets.

i'd like to correct that Cali exhuast noise is a maxium 95 dB.

They said decibel meter costs, aka Radio Shack Sound Level Meter is about $60. That's if your ticket for loud exhuast, you can prove your muffler street legal by measuring the dB. The law goes by actual dB reading, not because a cop thinks it's loud.

Just get another cop to test your car with the meter, and if its legal, have them endorse your case by getting there signature.
Bring all paper work to court. You only get one chance to prove your case.

Apexi WS is street legal, but the company test them on stock cars. Once you add CAI, headers, hi-flow cat, intake manifolds, turbos, ect. it may cause the exhaust noise to exceed legal limit.

Re: got 2 ridiculous tickets

simple solutions. here in florida, you can have your car examined by a police officer and if the car is fine, they just charge you $5. i think thats only when there was actually something wrong with the car (broken taillight, etc.). if there was nothing wrong to begin with, i don't believe they'll charge you. in either case, if they go against you, strap the stock stuff back on, have a cop check off on it, pay the $5 per ticket, and then put it back on.

P.S.
At least it isn't as bad as my ticket. 114mph in a 70mph interstate highway. i plan on fighting it anyways

wow that sucks...they would of arrested you on the spot here in va. it's a automatic arrest if you go over 90 mph.

btw how would the db sound tester work? do i put it against the exhaust? do i rev it or let it idle?

That's really wack, what happens when your stock exhaust is rusted and you replace that with a cheap non OEM original muffler like from Pepboys, Kragens, Midas, or Meinikie, isn't that modifying your exhuast too? silly laws.

hold it around 2 ft. from exhuast tip, you can play with different angles, and with the engine revved 3k to simulate the car driving on the streets.

Re: got 2 ridiculous tickets

if you wanna know how retarded virginia is (i also live in va), here are some laws i found
-Children are not to go trick-or-treating on Halloween
-It is illegal to sell peanut brittle on Sundays. (Repealed)
-You cannot sell lettuce on Sunday, but you can sell beer, wine etc. (Repealed)
-It is illegal to flip a coin in a restaurant to see who pays for a coffee.
-It is illegal for a woman to drive a car up Main Street unless her husband is walking in front of the car waving a red flag.
-It is legal for a man to beat his wife on the courthouse steps so long as it is before 8:00 pm.
-Any person who owns a pool risks a $2500 fine for not closing the gate to the pool when they get done swimming in it.

i dont know if these are for real or not, but always a good laugh

Re: got 2 ridiculous tickets

I work for a major automotive lighting company that supplies HID headlamps to Honda. To make HID system legal on a vehicle it needs the correct bulb marking on the lens and be aimed correctly. Horizontal aim is set by the manufacturer and is not to be adjusted by the end user. Whatever hid bulb is used should be stated on the lens. There should also be a DOT marking on the lens, not the ballast. These laws do not vary from state to state. It is a federal regulation(fmvss 108). I am not familiar with the aftermarket hid systems and cannot comment on their aiming recommendations. Just make sure that your vertical aiming is not blinding the oncoming traffic and you should be golden. Suggest to the officer next time that they brush up on the automotive lighting regulations before they hand out tickets for "illegal" headlights. HID is the light of the future and will someday be standard equipment.

Re: got 2 ridiculous tickets

I found out how much each charge is. The improper headlights are 87.00 and the improper exhaust is 36.00. What kind of bs is that? And a court fee of 45.00 if I decide to fight it and lose. What do you think I should do?

Re: got 2 ridiculous tickets

i think im just going to pay the tickets online and forget about them. there is a chance the cop won't show up and have it dropped but if the cop does show up, I know I will loose the lights charge and I will still end up paying the court fee.
