![]() Primer isn't there to match colours of plastic or make dark colours light, it is there to 'grip' the paint to the surface of the model and to mask any scratches, be they from the sandpaper or deeper from a file. Don't use primer and you will regret it, simple as that! A pro could probably prep a body for use without primer, but what's the point! Primer is there for that purpose. Give the body a coat or two of primer and stop ignoring the good advice we dish out! You can use that 2000 grade to LIGHTLY smooth the primer after it has cured. You wouldn't want to ruin that lovely kit now would you? |

Sorry, man. I'm tapped out now for models. In fact the $2.05 for the XF-7 was all coins. I got no more money to buy primer. Tell ya what, though. For my Skyline, not only will I spary paint 95%, I will use primer. I just know so little about modelling. Do I put primer on every surface to be painted, or just spray painted or what. I just don't know. This is only my second kit!

Before I post anymore, let me say this. Thank you, guys. I'm really glad you're willing to put up with my questions and idiocy (all the way up to witch slap, of course)
I do have a question. What should the underside of the car be painted. Should it be black or white and should it be flat or gloss. I'm guessing flat white, but I don't know. I also noticed this last night when I was painting the tail pipe. It calls for a paint H8 (Hasegawa paints). This color is not mention in the kit as being required, but it is essential. It's used on the tailpipe, mirrors and several smaller parts. I believe it is either chrome or silver. Fortunately, I had silver left from my ITR, and I used that. Right now, the tailpipe, rotors, brake disks, and springs and steering wheel are painted. I really like the Momo steering wheel, but it's soooo hard to paint it like it looks in real life. Pic below.

We slap because we care.
![]() Car undersides are usually painted the same color as the body, but unfinished, usually left with no polishing or clear coats for a semi-gloss look. Do the same for your models.

Thanks turbos86! That's what I thought. I looked at the box and it actually has that as a paint required, but the instructions don't have it. Go fig! :silly2:
Right now I have two base coats on the body with NO BUBBLES, let me say that again.... NO BUBBLES! The interior has 1.5 coats and a few small bubbles, but they are easily sanded. I'm excited! With 3 or 4 more good sunny days like this I might very well be finished! I'll keep you guys posted! ![]() I also have two copy paper boxes turned upside down to store my Evo. I have one that has my spray painted stuff in it and one that has my hand painted stuff in it. It seems to be working because there is significantly less crud on the body when I go back to put on extra-coats of paint.

Well, I peeled back the Tamiya masking tape on the interior this morning and it is as I suspected. The majority of it looks untouched, while there are a few places where the flat black bled in. Mostly in the seams. I now have to mask the windows and windshield to begin spraying those. I have most of the suspension painted as well as the the underbody. With any luck the underside and the interior will be finished tonite. I will also be adding another coat of paint to the Evo body today b/c it's warm and the sun is shining. Pics to follow!

Yesterday and today were slow modelling days. I had a lot to read for English so I didn't get much done besides one coat of red paint on the seats, a little masking and another coat of paint on the body. Here's a pic of all the little parts I have painted. What do you guys think of my masking job on the windows and windshield?

As per requested: yeah, yeah, it's blurry!
Above is a picture of my progress. So far the suspension is completed besides decals for the brakes and wheels and attaching the wheels. I found out while putting the suspension together that the wheels can turn!! The interior is mostly finished. I have to glue everything down, paint the door frame and do a little touch up. I also have to decal the speedo, tach, odo, and the recaro seat thingys. The body has recieved the last coat of spray paint and it looks much better than my ITR. Not much longer yet.

Check it out! Now the interior is done and the suspension! I've placed all the finished parts on top of one another for the photo (no glue!). The rest is just windows, lights and grill. How long should I let the body dry before I do anything with it?

While I'm in the week long waiting period...
This rubbing compound. When do I use it? Do I put on the decals first and then put it on. How long should I wait after I attach everything to the body?

Careful now, you don't want to see the primer again! Go easy on this one and under polish it so you don't get dis-heartened! Think of the cutting back as cleaning your teeth! You put decals on and all you will do is scrub them off again! They go on after the cutting and polishing! |
