Uhhh, powerbreaking messes up your torque converter, neutral drops messup your tranny. Launching with a manual is a lot better.

Only older automatics have 4 gears, all newer ones have at least 5 and BMW even came out with a 7 gear auto tranny.

Re: manual vs. auto

Or you can just launch in D. A person would have to shift in a manual, the auto will shift faster.

There's more gears only because they moved the shift points. For example, 2nd gear is moved down and 3rd gear will be where 2nd used to be, 3rd will be moved down and 4th will be where 3rd used to be, etc...

Automatics are built to shift up even when in d1 or L or whatever you want to call it, it will just happen at higher rpm.

I too would get a manual over an automatic, especially since I drive an underpowered automatic car and the tranny shifts up to 4th at like 30 mph and then when i give it some gas it then has to shift to 2nd (which takes a while) for it to be able to go.

Automatics also will shift before redline even when you floor it, which will reduce wear, but sacrifice performance.

Re: manual vs. auto

Again, you can launch a lot better with a manual.

When my friend in his automatic Mazda was racing me, it basically looked like he was still standing still while as I was passing him right at the start. He had 40 more horses and a lot more torque than me and his car only weighed 300 more pounds. I know that I wouldn't even be able to keep up with him in an automatic.

Of course it's easier to launch in an automatic, IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO LAUNCH A STICK. Once you learn how to launch in a stick shift then come back and tell me which one is better.

I've never heard anyone say that they'd rather launch an automatic than a stick shift in a race.

Unless you're powerbreaking (which I don't recommend if you like your car) stick over automatic all the way.

BTW, I have a 100hp manual civic and a 260hp 232 lb ft of torque Acura automatic and I KNOW that this little civic would own the acura for a couole of feet because it's an automatic.

Then perhaps ur firend needs to learn how to drive a stick before goes out and races in it.

Re: manual vs. auto

i heard that they didnt even use a "tranny" at all, just a big clutch pack that does something weird I dont know about, I have heard alot they have kinda like centrifigul clutches, but I just cant believe that for some reason. man that would have to be one beats of an auto to handle the kind of power to put them in the 4.20's at like 320+mph ( i think thats close to where they are at now, right?)didnt come from real good cources though either.

and hey takumi8187, no the auto will not shift faster than a good driver can in the manual. it can be made to do so, but most of the time if it is stock a good driver will be able to shift faster. I know I can shift my cars faster than my moms auto, my sisters auto, my dads auto, my uncles 2 autos, or my 2 old autos ever could shift. and I am sure some of the cheaper cars today still have 4 speed autos. and I know in the early-mid 903 there were 4 speed autos.

Or think about it this way, when I drive my 140 hp civic, I can chirp my tires in 2nd, but when I drive the 260 hp automatic, when it goes from one to two, there's no way they can chirp unless I'm in triptonic.

That means that going from one to two in the manual I change the gear fast enough so that my rpms stay high enough in seocond for me to chirp my tires, but in the automatic the rpms go almost all the way back down by the time I'm in second.

Unless you have an SMG, most of the time you'll be able to shift faster with a manual if you know how to drive, it's a fact.

That was stupid.

First off, I didn't say he was driving a stick and second of all, just because he drives an automatic, does that mean that he doesn't drive stick?

not true...if a car is in d1 or l thats the auto equivalent for first gear...hence why some cars even have a 2 for second etc...so no it will not shift up in d1 you will hit the rev limiter
