Re: Other purchases with new WRX

I guess my question now after seeing those replies are will I get a nice blow off sound from the stock turbo?

Re: Other purchases with new WRX

No need to get upset. And why assume that my mom buys things for me? I've been living on my own for almost a year.I get and pay bills monthly so back up off me. I've liked WRX's ever since they came out not just because. Besides i can already hear the 17 and 18 year old Girls asking me what that bad ass sound is when i switch gears

If that's the case, why don't you get a head start? If the guy wants a BOV, let him get a BOV. Some people, including myself, like the sound of a BOV.

Dont do this this its not a good idea. Theres no real need to take out the intake silencer and add a CAI. CAI's on wrx's just dont work good stock is usually the best. And I seriously wouldn't recommend turning your boost up to 15lbs stock is about 13.6 I believe, not that the engine probably couldn't handle it but you never really know. I wouldn't turn the boost up past stock till you get a new up and downpipe and exhaust. That would be the first thing I'd recommend spending your money on a new up-pipe, downpipe (the divorced one vishnu makes is a very good one), and some 3inch exhaust(the blitz nur spec rated very well with some of the highest gains and damn its got a badass sound). Once you've done that I'd say you'd be safe to turn that boost up to 15 or 16 but I'd recommend gettin a EBC to do that. Also a turbo timer is not really required for these cars since there watercooled but it sure wouldn't hurt the car any. And a BOV is gonna be pointless for any kind of gains untill your running more in the 300-400hp range, unless your just after the sound.

Re: Other purchases with new WRX

Some slight misconceptions here... WRXs don't come with BOVs, they have BPVs (By-Pass Valve). A bypass valve recirculates the unused air, whereas a blow-off valve just vents it into the atmosphere. Really, on a WRX a BOV is just a noisemaker. Personally, I think it's a cool noise sometimes. However, I like the quicker boost recovery response of the BPV. If I ever get a BOV (say, when I upgrade my turbo a few years down the road), I'm going to get a quiet one, though, so I can only hear it when the radio's off.
Secondly, the BOV works to "blow off" excess boost. It does *not* work when the turbo stops creating boost (as someone said on page 1 of this thread). It does exactly the opposite: when you pull your foot off the accelerator, the engine closes its intake valves, trapping pressurized air (boost) between the turbo and the cylinders (the turbo, by the way, is still spinning via inertia). The BOV or BPV allows that trapped air to escape without damaging anything. However, if you have a BOV set too low (ie, so that it hisses a lot more often and sounds hella rice), it will blow off the boost you were trying to use, which is not good either. You gotta find a balance between maintaining your boost, sounding cool, and not blowing up your motor. I say upgrade your plumbing and turbo and then get a BOV, so when you sound cool, you also go fast too.

Re: Other purchases with new WRX

Let's say you have your BOV set to open at 10LB's. Theoretically, it should at least begin to open when the pressure reaches 10LB. Will the motor, in Neutral, create boost(much like simply revving). And what is "Rice"

Rice is a staple food which is starchy in nature, refined rice is white whereas wild rice is browner in color. It's a good food to go with hot dishes like curry and chilli.

Re: Other purchases with new WRX

Well considering ive been racing mine for 2 years i would say its pretty safe considering not 1 thing is wrong with my car, i have a gutted exhaust, never bought an aftermarket up-pipe or down though i should now with my other mods. At the track i just run my downpipe.

Possibly one of the awesomest posts ever on this website. Oh, and I much prefer the monkey to the cat. And to answer the question more fully:

Rice is what the Japanese eat (and no, it's not just a stereotype... I ate more rice while I was in Japan than I ever have in my entire life. So much that I actually now like rice by itself). A starchy, staple food. Also indicative of the Japanese. Thus when somebody "rices" their car, or is a "ricer" or has too much "rice," they are making their car, in theory, too Japanese. This appelation comes from the theory that Japanese boy racers like to make their cars very showy and loud, while not necessarily very fast (although some riced cars are also very fast). Altezza lights, vinyl decals on the side of the car, obsessive chrome, loud exhaust or BOV, hood scoops and wings that do nothing, big shiny wheels, gratuitous skirts... all these things are of the Uncle Ben culture. They are bad. Anything shiny that you can buy at AutoZone is rice. No exceptions (well, maybe the chrome tire pressure gauge). Automotive rice is bad. It makes people laugh at you behind your back, lowers your self image, and makes girls run away in droves.

Re: Other purchases with new WRX

lol, i simply call them puerto rican/mexican/or cuban rides. you can easily tell them apart. they would have the black aluminum spoiler on their corrola from AutoZone with their custom exhaust...Not alot of BOV's.......at all. I dont see why not? some people have only heard them in the movies. You know what a really popular item is the quage row that goes along the side of the windshield...probably one gauge works out of 3 or 4 of them and thats the engine temp which is disconnected from the original dash board gauge. it is quite amazing...really. AND no, the girls definately do not dig these cars because they are started but will never ever be finished and they look like total sh*t.

Re: Other purchases with new WRX

I dont know about exhaust. There are too many stereotypes that go along with them. UNLESS I dress up my WRX with a body kit and rims will i put an exhaust on it.
