Dell usually makes good stuff fairly cheaply.

Building your own computer is a better idea, and cheaper, ESPECIALLY if you go the AMD route. Also all the major manufacturers are pretty stupid because they don't offer cheaper, and faster AMD computers (an AMD CPU is faster than an Intel CPU at the same Mhz).

Building your own computer can be more expensive, but you get what you want, not stuff you don't, so it can be cheaper.
HEres my dream computer:
Pentium 4 at 1.5 ghz
512 mb RDRAM
128 mb Videocard
tow 80 gig harddrives (10 000rpm, super-short find rate, superfast upload rate)
The rootinest-tootinist speakers (THX) and sound card
16 speed DVD player with re-write
21 inch LCD monitior
Anything else I am forgetting.:alien2:

Actually, I saved a lot of money.
Case w/ 300w PS: 60
128MB RAM: 40
750 Mhz Duron: 60
MoBo: 100
Vid Card: 99
Fan and heatsink: 10
HD: 100
floppy and cd-rom drive were taken from older computer

So my total is 469 bucks. Show me a Dell like mine that is that cheap.

Oh, so you bought the hardware then wired it together yourself. That would be cheap. I was talking about telling the computer store "I want that and this...".
I should do that (My friend knows how, and I'm learning)

Don't worry, this was my first computer I made. It's really not that tough. Everything fits together perfect and can really only go in one way, and there really isn't any wires that can be put in wrong and stuff.

I'm running on a POS GW2K (Don't buy one, they suck) PII 333 w/ 64 meg RAM. 17 inch monitor and boston acoustics (not bad, but not powerful enough) speakers. Damn CD-RW that doesn't work cuz my comp is so damn slow.

This is what I want to build:

CPU: AMD 1.33 GHZ w/ 266 FSB
Motherboard: ASUS A7M266 MOTHERBOARD
Memory: 512 MB DDR RAM
Case: Supermicro case

NIC: 3 COM w/ WOL
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Live! MP3+ 5.1 PCI
AGP Card: Waiting for the GeForce 3 card
SCSI Controller: Adaptec 19160 Kit, Ultra160 SCSI (LVD)

CD-RW: Yamaha 16/10/40X CRW2100SZ SCSI-3 KIT - WIN/MAC
DVD: Toshiba 12X SD-M1401 INT SCSI DRIVE
HD 1: Seagate Cheetah X15 ST318451LW - 18.4GB 3½" 3.9ms 15000rpm 160MB/Sec Data Transfer, Ultra160 SCSI (LVD)
HD 2: Seagate Cheetah 18XL ST39204LW - 9.2GB 3½" 5.2/5.8ms 10033rpm 160MB/Sec Data Transfer, Ultra160 SCSI

Monitor: Viewsonic PF790 19"(18) .25MM-AG 1600X1200 FLAT
Speakers: Keep BA cubes and sub
Keyboard: Generic 104 key
Mouse: Logitec Mouse

I think I could build it for sub 3 grand if I bought it all at shows. I would also run Progeny Linux prolly.

That is really detailed. Is the 266FSB the bus? Teh PIV has a 400 mhz bus (well, kinda. It works like 400mhz, bu tit really isn't)

Those harddrives are bitchin, but a little small.

I've seen benchmarks that show the Athlon runs faster than a PIV. I figure I could run OS (2000 profesional and Progeny Linux) stuff on the smaller drive and all the apps on the larger drive. It's 15000 RPM SCSI! Crazy.

Adam, I highly doubt you have a 40x DVD-ROM. Maybe a CD, but the fastest I've seen DVD's are 16x. And I have about 50(!) more d4efinitions now

Man, I want that hard drive!!!!! (15000rpm, unreal)
