302 vs. 351 vs. 300

I love my 89 302, I get 17 mpg and the gearing is agressive enough that it has plenty of torque.

Grama gear could pull a house!

I have a 76 F-150 with a 390 in it, I have 2 tanks and need them both to go around the block-10 mpg
or so,dont know if this engine was stock in the truck or not,got it from my dad when Dr.'s told him he couldnt drive anymore.
Also, it's a 4x4 and that doesn't help,but the power that engine has is unbelieveable!

i prefer the 302, we had two vans one an 83 one 84 with the 300 and one crapped out at 140k and the other started breaking distributor gear pins around the same time, never figured out why, i had a 1983 f250 4wd i bought off a builder with 70000 that had thrown a rod, now i'll admit that truck was abused and probably was run out of oil, i also had a 1991 4wd 300 5 speed back when it was two years old, at 40000 miles they had to overhaul engine because it sounded like the rods were gonna fly out every time i started it till oil pressure went up, i was never impressed with the power of the i6 engine especially if you tried to tow anything ,i would get passed by tractor trailers on hills just pulling about 2500 lbs. i did manage 23 mpg out of the six on a highway run when speed limit was still 55, i now have a 1988 150 supercab 2wd auto, it has a 302 the odo says 24000 but i don't know how many times it's flipped, i've been running it for three years and it may have a little less torque but not much less and it will drop a gear and run circles around the 300 I6. the 302 is much more fun to drive, the best i've done is 19 highway, usually 12-13 around town. pretty good for a 23 year old truck

I have a '96 F150 with the 4.9 L engine . When I first got it , it had no power ! Eventually , I put a new converter on it and it made a world of difference in the power output ! It gets 16-17 MPG in all around driving . It has 180,000 miles and still running strong .

Have a 93 F150 with a 302 that is shot, would like to upgrade to 351. will 351 bolt into the existing mounts & trans.

351W (Windsor) will, it is the same block as 302 just bored out larger. 351C (Cleveland) is a different block and will require different mounts and a trans adaptor.

As stated the 351 Windsor will bolt right up but with a few reservations. You will have to get a 351 flywheel or flexplate depending on manual or automatic transmission, the balance is different on the 302 and 351.

The heads are 2 inches farther apart on the 351, this will make a few slight mods necessary for the exhaust header pipe and the accessories that bolt on the front of the engine.

You will likely need a different computer.

The heads being 2 inches farther apart. If you have a single exhaust Y pipe, the ends that hook up to the exhaust manifolds will be 2 inches too close together with the Y pipe from the 302. In some cases if your a good crafter you can cut the Y pipe in a stratetic place and add a piece of pipe.
