Cool. Where were you situated in Oz. Why'd you go to US? How long ya been there? Permanent? Welcome to the Impreza forums. If you wanna keep up on the Ozzie car news, I suggest also the Honda/Acura -> Asia/Pacific forums.

Thanks! Ive been here several years. I live here permanently (for now).

I spend a lot of time in the Nissan XTerra Forum but have recently developed a serious interest in the WRX. I test drove two of them last week (the wagon and sedan) and am hooked. I think Ill pick one up in the next few months.
The availability in Seattle is terrible though on the WRX.

If only I could get my hands on a HSV..........

I'm an Aussie and I don't share the opinion of Ozriceboy.

Why start this kind of crap. The US have 3000GT's, Eclipses and Supra's with bigger standard turbo's than our Aussie imports. America didn't twist Japans arm to have these cars - Japan wanted to increase their market in the US, the classic example is DSM (Diamond Star Motors which is made up of Mitsubishi and Chrysler).

Each country has their own tough car, V8's, 6's and 4's. Where do General Motors Holden in Australia get their 'flagship' performance V8 engines from now? GM of America.

Apologies if you know these people and are having a stir, but if not, I don't agree with your narrow view.

OK. THe 3000GT was an Australian delviered car also. I have driven a mates red 1993 example. Eclipses are currently being tested for the cost of adherence to ADRs to be brought here and Supras are all over theplace thanks to grey imports. Your statement about America not having to twist Japans arm about these cars is rediculous. The words BIGGEST WORLS MARKET spring to mind. I think you need a serious reality check before you start flying off the handle about my 'narrow' views again.

THe 3000GT was an Australian delivered car also.
3000 GT’s in Australia, there’s not that many, and even less modified. In my state, I’ve seen about 4 in 5 years. They are here but show me any 3000GT/GTO that could out-mod a US one.

Grab ANY Supra in Australia and try to run the times of US spec ones with exactly the same mods. That’s right, you can’t. They all have smaller turbo’s and cams than the US ones standard. Just check out the mph of any BPU Supra – you wont find any Aussie/ Japanese spec import one with exactly the same mods running nearly as fast.

I’ve seen one here for testing, but they’re not here yet , and might never come, you're boasting about something they already have, and we don't yet.

America not having to twist Japans arm about these cars
Japan/ Mitsubishi knew they had the potential for a larger market in the US and knew that making cars on their soil (USA) would increase their sales without the import costs, etc. Incidently, the Mitsubishi Eclipse is the only one out of the 3 cars it was badged as from Diamond Star Motors that has survived.

They get the ‘new gen’ WRX Turbo/ Sti and you laugh about that, well we’ll only/ maybe get the ‘new gen’ Eclipse – meanwhile they’re currently down to the 8’s with theirs. Our WRX’s are only in the 10’s, atleast 1 second behind AWD Eclipses.

I love Australia and love what we have, but in regards to Supra's, GTO's and Eclipses, I think USA has the better hand.

Well, to add fuel to the fire, down here in little 'ol New Zealand, we get all the good shit. For some reason, there aren't many cars that are different between NZ and Japan.....

75% of the cars in NZ are used Jap imports, about 15% are new Japanese cars, and the rest come from Ausie and Europe.
Thats why there are so many Japas here.
Aussie is not far behind, however they dont get the same number of used imports that we do.

But simply becasue of our geographic location we do get a lot of very cool Japanese cars sold here new and 2nd hand.
Cars that will never make it to the US except as rare private imports which often are not raod legal.

However it works both ways; when was the last time you saw a ZO6 Corvette, or a SS Camaro? or a Dodge Ram? or an F150? (there are few now being sold in Aus, but not many). How about a Viper? Or Prowler?
Or one of the US Spec Maximas with a 6sp and due to its smaller size performance to match most HSV's.
Or the US Spec Odyssey which is quite a bit bigger than the Japanese version we get.
How about an Acura TL?
OR a 3000GT (GTO) Spyder?
Or a DeLoren? Theres only one in NZ and its locked in a museum, but people use them as daily drivers in the US.

You can just as easily say we're a little slow here in NZ and Ausie.
But the reality is niether coutry is behind the other.
We just happen to have differnt selections of cars due to our polotical and geographic circumstances.

75% is a little far-fetched-- I'd put it at 60-65% and NZ new Jap cars at 25% the rest would make up 15%- unless there has been some form of crazy surge in Used imports since I left- which I doubt because of the new restriction laws on older cars

I know there a shit load of imports.

What I meant was there are very few cars that are different NZ new compared to JDM. Example: Japanese S15 197kw, NZ S15 197kw, Oz S15 174kw'??'. We don't have as many emissions laws (yet) compared to other countries around.

Those power figures seem slightly ascue- the NZ and JDM are 184 Kw, the Oz version is 147Kw- I can't give an explanation as to why
