Re: hey, tell you what, let's ride the short bus

you can use the pen tool too in selection mode.

zoom in and using the polygon selection tool or whatever just click step click step.

couple hints:

holding down ctrl when you start to select adds to a selection.

holding alt subtracts

Another neat thing you could do is make a new layer and add your tones on that layer. You could then set it's layer properties to color or multiply and you would maintain the fluidity of your pencil line.

I'll make a quick tut in a sec here.

Here we go. Please keep in mind I'm actually at work right now so I went really really fast and this will just be an overview. In PS there's a thousand ways to do everything. This method may not work for some, if you want to get into deep detail PM me. I started PS with version 2.5. and know a buttload of tricks. (side note buttload is an actual unit of measure. equal to 126 imperial gallons.)

I start in this case with the polygon lasso. If these had been inked lines I'd go pen tool all the way, and let the black trap my line. Just click and then move towards the next point, kinda following your outer wheel and click again. Click step click step click step.

Like I mentioned earlier if you go to start clicking with a selection tool and hold alt on the first click anything you select will be subtracted from what is already selected. So I clicked and selected the whole tire side and rim then I held down alt and deselected the entire inside. That left me with a selection that was just the tire part.

I went to the select menu and clicked save selection. This actually creates a new channel, and saves my selection in case I want to use it again.

make a new layer by clicking that thing on your layers pallet.

I also changed my foreground color to a bluey dark dark grey. My background color is white. (note to get to black foreground/white background which is default in PS just hit the "D" key on your keyboard. Hitting "X" switches background and foreground).

Now it's cake. I selected the gradient tool and clicked on one side of my selection and drug to a point on the other side and let go.

I set the layer property to multiply which drops all white out of my layer and shows layers under it so I could see Bonz's cool pencil work.

Then I got my brush tool selected a radius of about 45 and here's the key......

....a very very low opacity setting. I think it was 4%. Then I just started to airbrush in soft layer after soft layer of my dark grey building it up to a point I liked.

I hit "X" on my keyboard, made my brush radius very small and brushed in some light as well.

Here's the tire now. I did the tread side real quick too.

Total time to color 4 minutes.

In the future I'll try to do something detailed. Hope that gets you goin Bonz. PM me if you want to talk I have a wealth of resources.

-Lemorris

p.s. sorry for being so undetailed, but I actually have a simulation to build before I go home.

Re: hey, tell you what, let's ride the short bus

lolol picture of the screen!!

no no if you hold down the alt key and press the print screen key it captures your entire monitor as a file to the clip board. Then you just crop out what you don't want.

I'm having a bbq right now. I promise to break this thing down for you later Bonz.
