I dont understand...i have a auto base (95 with the 6g72) and i redline it...it doesn't shift at 5k rpm. And i have it at WOT alot. So please explan.

the first and second gear doesn't take you very far, you can shift with those gears but it won't be that big of a factor to predict the outcome of the race, 3 gear is the most important, well, in my opinion. to red line third is important because is where most of the speed can pick up.. dsm97gsx what gears do you red line at?

Well im gunna through out my two cents here b/c i just raced a 95 gst this weekend twice, and i edged him by about a half a car to a car both times but it was close. so i think if your cars healthy and your a good driver the SL will win.

Okaaaayyy...so with overdrive off, they are in third (F4a33 4spd). I still fail to see your point.

As for "where the most speed can pick up", that varies from engine to engine based on cams, intake manifold choices, etc. A T25 equipped DSM will not make more power past redline as you imply due to:

A. Turbo running out of breath
B. Stock cams
C. Sub-par flow in the 2g head
D. Teeny intake manifold

I agree with your points. Car condition and driver skill are two HUGE factors in closely matched cars.

i understand that condition and drivers are big factors, and i do agree, 3 gear is important as to the gearing factors, if the car conditions match and the drivers equal, then the one that could reach read line would have a slight advantage to and automatic that can't, past red line is not what i was refering to, it's also bad for any engine, everyone knows that. and a turbo running out of breath, a SL doesn't have a turbo, so it doesn't matter if the SL could pass red line or not... this is my argument, which would you say have the advantage between a auto and a stick with equal car conditions and both good drivers? the Stick would you not agree?
