Re: Replacements?

Come on guys, give the guy a break. He was just trying to give us a topic to discuss. You don't have to jump all over him.

And I think that some of you are confused. He isn't talking about putting the car back into production, just replacing the cars that have already been, or may be destroyed in the future.

I think its a good idea jcsaleen.

I didn't really mean to rag on him - I've just seen this place come close to dissolving into garbage a few times in the past and I find it rather frustrating. I'd rather stop things if they were headed in that direction that let it get to the point where I don't want to participate anymore. My apologies for the slight over-reaction - his choice of words there just didn't sit well with me.

= = = = =

As for the original topic - I think if an F1 were damaged to the point that it couldn't be properly restored to life by McLaren Cars then that car should be given a proper burial just like XP1.

Seriously though - as sad as it would be to lose an F1 I don't think it should be replaced. It's like those "classic" Cobras that Carroll Shelby was building a few years back using left over chassis' from the '60 - they weren't classics and they just weren't the same. The cars had no history other than their metal shells had sat in the corner of a storage warehouse for several decades. You might as well have bought one of the higher quality reproduction kits on the market and saved some money in my opinion.

Additionally, if an someone destroys an F1 (and it's their fault) they should have to live the rest of their lives thinking about what they have done, not pay a bit of money and get themselves a new one. Roman Scherer and Bernd Piechstrieder (both BMW employees) are the two I'm familiar with that lived to talk about it, but neither were actual F1 owners. I also believe that if negligence is involved that all efforts for them to purchase another F1 should be squashed so they don't repeat the occurrence. Of course many of the owners could truly afford to buy a half dozen of them if they chose to do so, so good luck enforcing that rule.

Re: Re: Re: Replacements?

Kinda of off topic but about the Lm's I read in 1 of the osts that the sultan of Brunei has 3 of the 5 lm's. I personally think the the lm's should be limited to 1 per owner. I mean 3/5 thats just not right.

Don't worry it won't get to the point of SC.net forums thats for sure.

I'm not certain that McLaren had any other buyers lined up for the LMs at the time so when you have someone who wants 3, why not sell them 3. The F1 GT is even more exclusive with only 3 produced, and McLaren Cars were only able to find two buyers for it. The 3rd car still at the factory with a last known pricetag of £1,000,000.

The F1 road car wasn't exactly that hot of a seller to begin with at it's £600,000 + price tag, so expecting people to pay even more for a car that was less friendly on the road was probably not an easy proposition. If McLaren were "Ferrari" I suspect they'd have had a better chance moving a million dollar car as they already have a large customer base of wealthy individuals just waiting to buy the next special car that comes off the line. Just look at that monstrosity the Maserati MC12 - they're building 50 of them with less power (-60hp I beleieve) than the Enzo and charging an additional $150,000 for them and you can guarantee that all will be sold. Crazy, just crazy...

Yep, you're right about that!
It's only my opinion!

I agree with the rest of your list though.

I think the longtail McLaren is beautiful!

Re: Replacements?

Ive always had this fear though about long tail carz. That if I drove a long tail the end would be long enough that the back would kick out and I would spin and crash thats why I like the lm nice short tigh back nice and snug.
