Aside from those obscure dictionary definitions (as exemplified by some of the above posts), that as far as I'm concerned no one who speaks contemporary English can even understand, I don't think you can define it...

Ok, so it's present tense of "be"

That doesn't tell me what it is at all, because, hypothetically speaking, I'm Japanese, learning English, and I have no idea what "be" means either

That's where translation comes into play. Surely every culture uses some terminology for existance.

My definition: A word to state fact (It is 1:00) or to assign status (Kat is head honcho).

That is my own definition that I pulled out of the BS archives in the back of my head
