A jap car enthusiast promoting the 5 series? yup I really do like the new 5 series for it's ability to balance sports car performance, incredible luxury, and a family car that you can let your kid take out on a friday night... I personlly like the agressive look and style... As for quality the 530 would be the 3L engine derived from the 3 series so it does not go through the bugs of a new engine and thus I would trust it...My friends family owns a 528 and they have had a few cosmetic problems (2 door handles have fallen off) and brake problems, but nothing else...I would endorse the new 5 series

2004 530i

I picked up my 530i in November 2003. It's got over 7K miles and I can honestly say I've never owned such an incredible car. I've had 2 Mercedes (which were nice) and my husband picked up his 2004 Lexus the week before my BMW arrived and none of them hold a candle to this car. We're even trying to figure out how to get rid of the Lexus (which is constantly in the shop - but that's for another forum) to replace it with another BMW without losing our shirts. I've had absolutely no problems with this car. It's quiet, smooth, comfortable, and handles like nothing I've ever driven. I'm amazed that a 6-cylinder gets such great gas mileage. I get over 28 mpg city/36 mpg hwy (and I'm not a laid back driver). I only wish I lived where the roads weren't so flat and straight so I could really enjoy the capabilities of this car.

As for those who speak so negatively of the iDrive I can only wonder if they really spent much time using it. It took only a few minutes to figure it out and now I hope I never have to own a car without it. It truly takes automotives to the 21st century.
