OK. Now I'm getting this, warmonger. I am confused on this:
"Simply lock the hubs and drive with them that way. Then when you need 4WD, shift into hi and keep on truckin'. "

So, when I 1st shift into 4HI that is locking them right? And it won't un'lock until I put it into reverse? Or are we talking about a whole different course of action here?

In a summary of my understanding. When next driving to Winter Park I can:

1) While driving (ala getting OFF the freeway and turning up the zig-zag road) i can shift from 2WD to 4HI. No roadside stoppage.
2) Continue along in 4HI making turns as long as the roads are icy, bad, or have gravel.
3) I get to sections of clear pavement and SAFELY shift to 2WD while driving. No roadside stoppage.
4) Know that until I actually stop and see the icon go off while in 2WD the the hubs are locked.
5) Repeat 1-4 all up and down the trip to Winter Park, without leaving the driver's seat or pulling over.

Correct?

Righto. My reference to the hubs is for manual hub Xterras. Autolockers you don't have to worry about locking, they will do it automatically. Make sure you review the owners manual for the max speed you can engage 4WD at (I believe it is around 50 mph).

I've seen a few posts about this over the last year, and I just realized I have a custom sun visor.
The top side of my driver side visor has airbag death info, so does the bottom side of the passenger visor. The bottom side of my driver side visor has nothing about shifting, just info that an SUV handles differently than a passenger car.
Is this an SE, XE thing ? 2000, 2001 thing ?

BTW, Sham I'm glad you never thought of joining RMXC. If driving to Winter Park on a highway scares you, driving off-road would have you wetting yourself before we even shifted into 4Lo. Thanks for clearing up what a man you are.

The 55 mph limit in 4WD is only during the break-in period.
After that it's up to the driver and conditions.

The Xterra does fine at 70+ on dirt roads in 4Hi.

My visor is the same, there's actually a sticker on the roof liner under the visor that has the info about how to shift the transfer case.
