I think you've just blown a fuse. My 99 Tacoma used to do that--if the brake light fuse blew the trans wouldn't shift out of park, and you had to pry up the quadrant cover and press the little button to get it out of park. The owner's manual for mine described the procedure

We've already established that the fuse was blown. Now I'm trying to find the cause of the blown fuse. That's why I need to know where the harness connects into the vehicles electrical system.

Whatever happened with this problem. I'm going through the same thing right now with my 99 4runner. thanks for any help.
