I agree with bigfataussie on that the auto is not worth it. but i wouldn't totally rule out your friends car. first thing to do is call a performance shop and ask them how much they would charge for the manual conversion. if its too much then I'd suggest you go with my suggestion and look into getting one in NSW. good luck.

Bigfataussie... cars imported over that are 15 years or older may not be charged the $4500 compliance rate, but they still require the engineer's certificate - which is about $1200.
My hubby, who imports cars and parts, brought and imported over a limited edition manual 1989 Impul 4 door GTS-T Sykline... all up, it cost us $10,000 to buy the car, ship it it over, get the engineer's report and get the damn thing onroad. Strangely enough, the car is listed on Prestige Motorsports - Impul page Also their price quoted doesn't include the cost of Govt. stamp duty, engineer's report and registration. Seriously, before importing or buying locally, do a bit more research. Have a chat in some of the other car forums ie Skylines Australia orNissan Silvia and get their feedback as well. Also, try and get an idea of prices and how much you can spend. From your total budget, calculate the cost of getting the car onroad, RWC, engineer's report, taxes, customs, shipping, cost of the guy in Japan dealing with the paperwork, cost of the guy in Australia doing the paperwork AND what you'll have left is how much you can actually spend on a car. Also... there'll be the additional costs involved in buying a car that old ie replacing worn parts, etc. Hope this helps... don't want to make you think i'm doing the hard sell on you to use hubby's services... just giving you some helpful advice... hopefully... |

Re: importing to AUSTRALIA.
$1200!? don't know where u got that done but u got ripped. u can find places that do it for 250, govt. stamp duty is 3% of the car so its 600 for a car thats 20000. but ur right there are additional costs u have to consider, but the good thing is that with the fifteen year rule u don't have to make the car stock again to get it on road, u can get a modified car heaps done to the engine and whatever else, as long as u can find an engineer to tick it off then theres no cost, not like with sevs.

Re: importing to AUSTRALIA.
Yeah, you're right on that one... compared to the cost of compliance for our manual Soarer ($4500), $1200 is a better price.
With the 15 year old ruling, there's still stuff you have to do that jack the price up to $1200 - like intrusion bars, cat, seatbelts, child restraints, petrol filler neck, dimmer switch, etc + engineer's certificate. |

I think its all Inflation, theres no way the 1989 R32 GTR models should cost that much. 6 months ago you would of seen the same cars for sale for $3,000 less

Re: importing to AUSTRALIA.
it has nothing to do with inflation.
The number of cars up for sale is not and will not increase so it is simply a matter of supply and demand. If the demand out weighs the supply then prices increase. why? because they can. |
