Re: What drifting car should I get for under $4000???

You see old guys driving them because they want the best driver's car and they've probably been driving and racing and doing whatever with cars since before most of us were born. You would be hard pressed to find an "old man" who is rolling in a beemer that is a poor driver.
Even if the car happens to be an automatic 530i. You might wanna think twice before racing the guy.

Re: What drifting car should I get for under $4000???

I've heard this old man opinion before. I used to wonder about 2002's long before I got one. There was always this buzz about them here and there in car magazines and from loose associations of mine. I always thought they looked kinda geeky. Then one day I read an article in Road & Track about the Tii and how awesome it was for its day. I was walking down the sidewalk into town and there was one parked on the curb and I stopped and took a good long look at it. Once you've driven one, or ridden in one, the styling kinda makes sense to you.

That and the 510, which is basically the japanese equivalent.

Old school to learn.

Mate, what ya really want is a 72 Holden LJ torana with a 3.3l red motor, triple 45mm webbers, stage 6 yella terra head, huge cam, bilstein suspension all round, watts linkage rear, a ford 9" LSD, seam weld it, put a roll cage in and a couple of racing seats and harneses and go and learn. Jap cars cost a million bucks to fix, allways break, and being turbo are harder to control with your accelerator pedal. stay away from anything with rear leaf spring suspension coz they tramp, In Australia there is a huge drift scene but most of the cars that win are old, naturally aspirated shit boxes that have been done up. Go hard Mate!!!

Unfortunately, alot of people drive the BMWs for the badge, at least around here. But the people who know what a drivers car is, but dont want a kidney pounding ride or cant be arsed to mod a car usually by a BMW.

That's true everywhere. But it's pretty easy to pick apart the posers and the drivers.
They where the badge just to try and pass off as someone that knows what they're doing. You most likely won't see a 50yr. old man with chrome 20's on his car and 3 12in. subs in his trunk.
Your going to see them in a flat cap and driving gloves passing you on a hairpin.

Merkur XR4Ti, that 4cyl is very strong when modded. And if you dont like the looks, do a Cosworth conversion. Nice
