Re: Can someone give me a rundown of HOW you engage nitrous?

lemme bring this up about nitrous...i have a friend, who albeit isn't the brightest, but he has his moments

he tells me he's getting a nitrous intercooler spray kit. The nitrous gets sprayed right on the intercooler 'super cooling it'. I say it's not a very efficient a)use of nitrous, and B) method of cooling an intake charge. But he's swearing by it up and down, he doesn't have the kit yet btw.

so, am i wrong on this, or does spraying the outside of the IC with nitrous cool the charge to a 40 degree range.

I find that a bit hard to believe and am all in favor of, if anything, getting a water mister to mist the actual intake charge rather than using any sort of passive cooling method.

I could list a dozen reasons as to why this is a VERY BAD idea.

Instead, I would challenge your friend to tell you technically why this is feasable or warranted, who told him this would work.

I'm willing to bet that the story is going to start off with "...I have this buddy that knows everything about cars and he's the mad tuner dog! And HE said...."

Re: Can someone give me a rundown of HOW you engage nitrous?

dude...you are freaking 90% right on!!

i had asked him why before but he never gave me a straight answer. so i was getting on him about how stupid it sounded and he says, "well my friend has it on his car and said it drops the intake temp to around 25 degrees"

I was just staring asking if he had ANY common sense left in his head....obviously most of it has escaped...

He can spray this stuff called 'Cryo' on the intercooler.

A question to the nitro pros here, not to sound like a ricer but can you inject that cryogenic crap into your engine to cool the air temps? I'm not saying spray a crap load...just enough vapor to cool the air going in. Just an idea.

Yeah, I wish I had a dime for every "I got this friend with..." story that I've heard. I'd be retired with my OWN speed shop by now.

integra818:
I wouldn't do that. That cryo-stuff is a mixture of chemicals that you couldn't pay me to inject into an engine. Take a look at the bottle and read the contents and then really think about the consequenses.

Water injection is the only REAL way to cool intake charges and prevent detonation. It has the least amount of impact to the fuel/air mixture. When you start injecting other chemical compounds in the intake you start running a severe risk of upsetting your lean/rich balance and you start running the risk of damaging your engine.

Here's another tid-bit from "Scott's Tips";

Inovation is nice, but don't destroy your motor just because you're trying to save a few bucks from doing the job the right way.

Oh, if you want an inexpensive way to cool your intake between runs... here's an "old-school" dragger trick.

Go to the store and buy a couple bags of ice and put them in a cooler on the way to the races. Then before each run, place the bags of ice one your intake manifold for at least 10-20 minutes just before your runs and try and keep the engine shut off as much as possible. Push it into the staging lanes with the ice still on it and don't start it until the stager signals for you to pull up. Your intake won't stay cool for long but every 10 degrees helps and picking up free extra .05's to your ET is always nice.
