wow thats a good poll

i havent driven either one unfortunately

id have to go with the 70 GS Stage 1
its really hard to mess with 500 ft/lbs of torque, Stock!

as for modern cars tho, i would rank the GNX as one of the best
i guess u can consider an 87 modern right?

i would have to say GSX all the way 455 with 510 torque that thing would make the world spine faster, or slower depending on the direction. but those GNXs are quick from what i hear. its actually my bros dream car.

i own a 68 gs and i would have to agree with the gsx, i mean if your going for straight power the gsx is the way, all the gsx can take almost any car just stock i mean come on, it can run low 13's straight from the factory....but then again i have never ridding in a gnx

Ultimately, either one is plenty fast. It depends on how you like your muscle - big block, or turbo charged. You can't go wrong with either one.

Ridden in both, only driven the GSX

I wish I could own either, and may some day if I am still in the will, but my father has an Apollo White '70 GSX Automatic. It has been completely retooled, looks 100% stock, but drive train recently rebuilt, and all new paint, etc. I rode in this when it was stock and that was enough, it was amazing. I have driven or ridden in probably 2/3 of that era's American Muscle, (being the kid of a collector) and nothing touches the GSX though I have not been in a SuperBird, or Cobra. He recently bought #300 and something of the '87 GNX line, and this is one of two that were actually bought back by ASC/McLaren for shows and in which they added a sunroof. (From what I hear these are the only two of original McLaren build that did) I have not ridden in this one yet, but did sit and oggle it a couple of weeks ago. My father said, it was close but the GSX was better low end torque and upper end since the GNX was choked by the governor. I guess I would take both, but I am sure my sister will get one.......

Slightly off topic, but here's my take. GS's are OK if you must have V8 rumble. I had a pristine GS clone for almost 15 years. I'm glad it's gone. I'd have to own a bank to fuel it today. Now I have a turbo Buick since 97. I'm only sad I came late to the darkside. TRs are the best of both worlds........Poor man's ZO6, affordable to drive all the time........20 mpg., cold AC and faster than most big blocks of any make without spending the farm.

Re: Which is the ultimate Buick: the 1987 Buick GNX or the 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1?

Decisions, decisions...

Going by appearance, GS all the way! Looks cool! The GN looks like a box on top of another box.

Going by acceleration and general performance, GN. Lighter, better handling, just about as powerful, it's supposed to pull away from the GS, if not exactly disappear from in the distance...

Maintenance? Hmm... they are both old cars now. Parts are probably still being made for both, although not necessarily by GM. But the GN uses an engine management computer and systems inaccessible to and unusable by a shade-tree mechanic, and if the systems are unavailable, the car won't run. Advantage, GS.

Which would I rather have? Well, being superficial, I'd go for the GS. However, what I'd really want is a Firebird Turbo Indy Pace Car with the GN drivetrain; the ONLY F-bodies with the GN drivetrain! Now, if Buick had an F-body, then I'd choose that...

P.S.: The 1970 GSX was available as a convertible, wasn't it? If so, F*** THE GNX! GSX Convertible all the way! Hell, even a Skylark V-6 Convertible over the GNX or a GSX coupe!

P.P.S.: I read elsewhere in this forum that the GSX was not available as a convertible. RATS!

Anyway, IMO, the most beautiful Buicks ever, and one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen (and I have seen one in the metal) were the '71 - '73 boattail Rivieras.

Re: Which is the ultimate Buick: the 1987 Buick GNX or the 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1?

I have to go with the GSX also. The GNX is a true love of mine as well, but I step back in time to the muscle car era when I'm in my GS or Elcamino, when I feel the manufactures and the American way was pride in what we made, and quality. I think the GNX was the last time Buick did things right also, I agree when everything went front wheel drive, the excitement vanished along with the chrome bumpers. So I love my 86' Regal as well, the ride and amazing handling that can be had in these cars are great. But overall winner in these 2, I vote for GSX. But All time greatest muscle car? We all have different flavors, but the light duty manual window bareboned Copo ZL1 427 Camaro's were top notch. I always considered the Vette a sports car, not categorized as Muscle even tho 2 were made with the Aluminum ZL1 427 also. To me Muscle was standard Sedan 2 door models, which competed with the engine HP wars of the late 60's - early 70's.

Actually, I'd prefer a regular GS over a GSX. GSX was just an appearance package on the GS and it looks gaudy.

On the GNX, however, the "X" actually means something in terms of X-tra horsepower.

GNX. Both are fast but that killer black turbo stance with the vents in the front fenders and the flared wheel wells screams. Watch out!

Well Sam, if you really read the history of these cars, you'd know better then to comment as you did. Only in 72' was the GSX an appearance package. 70' was the most modified and the peak performance GS & GSX's. In 71' was the beginning of the downturn in Horsepower due to increasing gas prices, but mostly government regulations, putting an end to the growing horsepower muscle car wars.
The 70's GSX stage1 was claimed at 360 - 365 horse power / 510ft/lbs of torque. The GS 455 was 350HP, / 510ft/lbs. If you read it's history at many websites available, there was a bunch of changes to the 70' GSX, rear gearing changed, hood Tach, suspension etc. In 71' the horsepower dropped off 15 HP to 345, and much lower in 72' when they started to go by Net HP rating, not at the crank. So every year of those 3 bodied years, they were different.

Yes the finishing looks could have been considered gaudy to some. But that's just opinions. I've had the luck to run into an older fella here who retired in Phoenix, who was a design member for Buick on the GS, & GSX project, working for Buick back then, and got to look over his 100% original 70' GSX he's had since new. Wish I could remember his name. But it is one of few muscle cars that completely awestruck me, I've seen ton's of sweet cars at Barrett Jackson Auctions. But a true GSX in that spectacular Yellow & Black is awesome!
Happy New Year all.
