Re: Finished: Tommy Kaira M30 Skyline

Dang. Very nice work. Another car that looks real, and needs a 2nd look to see that its a model. Great work.

It's funny you should mention that ...you are absolutely right too . This is the second wing I made for it. The first one I messed up so I had to start again. The first one did have shorter supports and did look better but I only had tall supports left in the kit with which to make a replacement. I might rescue the old wing, strip it apart, clean it up and use that when my CF decal arrives.

The original wing was the two piece SAS one...it definately looked better lower down...

My LHS sells the tread plate for model railroad detailing. It's just styrene sheet so it's easy to work with. Covered in BMF it looks just like the real thing

86_SR5: I knew you were joking really These R31 kits seems to be frought with difficulty and problems I think. Just keep at it and you'll win though with yours

Re: Finished: Tommy Kaira M30 Skyline

Wow ratdat, that looks fantastic.
So lookout for "7th_skyline's 7th Skyline mk2 thread" one day in the near future!
I like the interior, lhd dash was a headspin, but it looks really good. The color really suits it too! I know the wing is a little high, but it still looks cool!

I've ordered another one from HLJ and I'm going to redo mine, because my paint looks ok in photos but its horrible close up (funnily enough, it reacted really badly on the first paintjob in metallic dark blue tamiya paint, then when I stripped and primeredit it was ok in tamiya primer, but with the candy lime it reacted and cracked on the roof and bootlid...).
Also, on the problems with the kit, did you have troubles with the body sitting too high on the chassis when you first fitted it up? I had to mess around for ages to get it to sit down right, it originally sat about 4mm too high up :o And yeah, on the next one I'm going to fit the passage GT projector lenses in, I had them ready but wimped out this time.

The next one - it will be P . I . M . P !

I'd just go for automtive paints. I don't often have problems with them providing you paint carefully and lightly for the first few coats ...and make sure the primer covers all the bare plastic

Yeah, if you look at the pics of mine in some shots you can see the edge of the chassis below the sill. It wouldn't go in that last 3-4mm without a lot of re-engineering of the interior so I didn't bother. I just lowered the suspension enough to make up for it. It really isn't a very good kit. This one was the Tommy Kaira kit but i suspect most of the Fujimi R31 kits are probably the same. Does Aoshima make an R31? I haven't had a look to find out.

I think if I did it again I'd probably make some custo headlights with clear, non-textured lenses and multi surfaced reflectors like some modern cars have. Trick to make on such a small item but it'd look cool.

Nice work!
Great detailling on the wheels.

I somewhat find the GT-wings rather odd on it.

I got the chance to take some outdoor pics ...in the snow!

I think I need to re-do the rear turn signals and polish the tail lights to get them a bit glossy looking. I'll do that when I do the wing I think.
