no, but really, don't get 17's. i think they are way too big, and they also look really stupid on 4th gen. 16's look alright, but i would recommend 15's |

Well, if you keep the final wheel/tire height the same... the speedometer is still accurate.. and your gearing isn't modified... which means that the only difference in acceleration will be a function of weight.. which will not be a drastic change like you can experience when changing the actual overall height....
A proper +2 (i.e. 15x6") tire is 195/50R15 ... Since the 4G Civic/2G CRX needs approx. 22.6-22.7" total height... This means that with 16x7 you need a 205/40R16... And with 17x7... you would need a 205/35R17.. which doesn't seem to exist... So.. that means your car will have taller gearing if you go to a 17"... That means your speedo will read a lower MPH than your actual speed.. And your acceleration will be reduced... That also means better gas mileage and higher top speed..... In other words, using 17's on the Civic/CRX would be a good solution if you are running something like a ZC 5spd trans and don't want to turn so many RPMs at 70 MPH.... As you could drop your gearing a bit and have lower RPM cruising.... However... most of the time.. this choice is only dictated by looks..... people dont seem to mind that their oversized wheels/tires dont have the proper height and are slowing their cars down... adding unsprung weight to reduce handling/braking/acceleration... |

Re: 16's or 17's
I have 17's (well my stock 14's are on right now) and im lowered about 1.5-1.75" and i have no problem with rubbing or turning. I know with my 14's i have better accelleration by a lil but i dont mind with my 17's cuz i know my car isn't that fast anyways, and i dont drive it like it is, so its all good. If i ever decide to go fast w/ my car ill prolly get lightweight 15's.

Hmmm...lot of opinions goin' around in here, but I wonder how many people have actually tried the different sizes for themselves...
The first set of rims I had on my hatch were 16's with 205/40-16's. They looked good and performed well. The second set was 17's with 205/40-17's (check the "Tint" thread) - lowered 2 1/2". IMO they looked better than the 16's, but my ride/performance suffered (slightly). Right now I'm rollin' on 15's (Si wheels) with 205/55-15's and they're alot better (all around) than either set I had before. I think 17's fit our wheel wells perfect, but looks aren't everything. It all depends on what you want (ie. looks vs. ride/performance). If you're going for looks, go with 17's. If you're more concerned with performance, but still want good looks, I'd go with 16's (which I plan on doing in the future). It's up to you... |
