I autocrossed a 5 speed PT Cruiser all this past year. Very good handler and very stable. That's not what it's meant to do, but it's not bad, and was able to net me 3rd place for the season, with no modifications to it other than air pressure in the tires...

As for the rear axle and drum brakes: The Watts linkage rear axle is not a bad thing in a FWD vehicle. Golfs have used it to good success in both street driving and road racing. Rear drums are fine, as the front brakes do 80% of the heavy stopping, and all of the light stopping. There was no fade when autocrossing, and the brakes were easy to modulate.

Drove a new 5 speed PT Turbo last week, and the car scoots very good. If it's like the regular PTs, in that it requires about 3000 miles to go by before the chip allows the engine to make full power, then these are going to surprise a lot of performance car owners! The 5 speeds are noticeably faster than the automatics...

Tell me more about the acceleration. Do you think because of weight, the car might not out accelerate some cars w/ less Hp?

There will always be faster cars out there. But, the PT only weighs like 300 lbs more than the new Neon SRT-4, so it's going to be quicker than a lot of supposed performance cars... And easily tweaked past 300 hp with factory parts.

My wife is on her second Cruiser. They are both company cars. She works for a company that makes props for commercials, auto shows, and other things. Their most famous prop is the big Octopus that hangs from the rafters at Joe Louis arena where the Detroit Red Wings play. Because of the artistic bent of the organization, and because of the fact that my wife has to pick up and deliver bulky items, a car that has both a lot of style and a large interior volume was perfect for her needs.

She loved her 2001 Cruiser. But it was a little slow, especially when it was loaded. So this year she got an Electric Blue Turbo Cruiser. What a difference! Besides the added horsepower, it has traction control, disk brakes on all four wheels, and 17" wheels. And while it may not be an all-out hotrod, it is fast enough to keep up with a supercharged Grand Prix that got a head start.

LOVE your sig, maximus!

I drove one of the Turbo PT's. It was a lot more fun then I thought it would be. That manumatic tranny or whatever it is was kinda fun, too. I didn't think it would actually do what you told it to when you told it to do it like it did.

I figured that the turbo would be fun to drive... But there are way too many of these things on the road. Not the turbo yet, but I see about 10 PTs a day... The convertable should be interesting and maybe a turbo convertable?

How about this for a different Pt. Mine has a full Hahn stage 2 turbo fully built motor with Weisco forged pistons,T2 forged rods,Crane cams and gears and full Crane ing.full Xeon kit ,Koing wheels and a ton more of toys. Some of u may not like the looks but they are here to stay and they are takin there fair share of trophies at shows from those imports. What else is nice is that at shows with many other cars they are excepted. They are not thought of as another rice burner with a fart can hangin out the back !

Just got my '04 PT GT about a month ago. I'm not sorry I got it. It's got it's own style. Yes, some like it and some don't, but it's easily recognizeable. So many mods available to fit the driver's personality.

Re: Aftermarket going crazy after PT Cruiser

lol some of you ppl are complete jackasses. not every car company builds a car for speed. the cruiser was built for one purpose, economy. and at the time of its conception the styling couldnt have come at a better time. oh whoop de doo your comparing it to a caviler, what sh*t allready, better than an aztek or hhr and caviler and since the turbo, even better. ever heard of a pt bruizer....

That's funny, some guy in a Grand Prix tried to race me once and I put him in my rearview mirror!! He was so embarrassed he hid his face as I pulled away and waved to him!
