I believe 3500 is the rev limit when your ECU see's a serious problem that it can't compensate for and goes into limp mode like whtteg was describing.

ECU isn't seeing one of your sensors or see's a dangerous condition being reported by one or more of the sensor's. This would be my guess. I'd double check that all the wiring from ecu to each sensor dealing with intake/exhaust show's continuity. you can do this with a paper clip between 2 wire's at one end, and an ohm meter at the other end.
