hmm, I think i'm just going to leave the overdrive thing off, I heard that can't hurt your engine even if you go over 40 mph, but it can hurt your engine if you have it on under 40 mph. The damn thing still is hard to turn off after it's been activated. Hopefully a mechanic will be able to fix it

actuallyt ita the other way around man, over drive is like using the 4th gear (auto's have 4 gears), so its only useful to turn it off so the engine can use the engine braking, (higher rpms in 3rd gear)

it dosent really matter when its on or off at low speed like under 30, but if the you are going a speed where 4th gear could be used, and your thing is off, you would be running in 3rd at higher rpms, losing gas mileage and i guess putting more stress on the engine

so with your overdrive off, your car has only 3 gears to go about

my overdrive is always on

i HATE AUTOMATICS!!

ANYONE KNOW OF ANY BLACK FATSBACKS FOR SALE\?

so u r suggesting I leave the overdrive always on for less damage to the engine? I don't think it shifts it to 4th, just b/c when u accelerate from a complete stop it with overdrive on it would accelerate very slooowwwllly if it was on 4th gear

?

automatics have gears too, they shift, imagine driving a stick car, ( have u before?), and all u had was 3 gears to work with, thats what over drive off does, it does not start in 4th, but it lets the car use a 4th gear

lemme know if i aint clear

yeah i've driven a stick-shift before (not very well) but I know all about the gears and shifting. Alright, h/o i'm confused about the whole overdrive thing. When overdrive is off, the button is not pushed in, and when it is pushed in the overdrive is on then right?

Also with overdrive I don't think it shifts at all, I think it just uses less gas to help you with gas mileage. I could be wrong though.

i know that automatic has gears it must shift just like manual-stick shift, except they automatically do it, but I don't think the OD being turned on shifts it to fourth gear. When overdrive is turned on, what you're saying is that it'll be in fourth gear then, and fourth gear will not accelerate fast from a complete stop. It'll accelerate slower than a Geo Metro, so that's why I don't think overdrive shifts to 4th gear. Try it, the 240sx will still accelerate fast from a complete stop even if you have overdrive on.

ehh, how can i explain this to u

OD is giving ACCESS to the car to use the 4th gear, not MAKING it be used, but ALLOWING IT to be used IF NEED BE

oh ok well i didn't know u meant it like that. But why have a button then, why not just include automatic overdrive without the button?? My friend's car has that, where it'll just do it itself. why wouldn't the 240sx have the same? this od button is drivin me nutz, today i kept struggling to try turnin the damn thing off when i was at a stop light.

eh, nissans are reliable enough and the 240sx is a fun car to drive. And damn, your cavalier has 261k miles on it??? I thought American cars died way before it gets that high. and it's only a 98 too, how much do you drive everyday??
