Well...you all flame him for possibly starting a flame war, and it turns into a sensible debate about American muscle vs import

That shows that the majority of the muscle cars from the muscle car era actually broke well past the 15s... all stock on crappy tire technology.
I think you missread. I wrote the majority (you did too, but IMHO used it incorrectly) of these muscle cars - not just the very best. And their times are questionable too - I'd hate to think how much time they spent looking through back issues to dig up which mag had the best 1/4 miles times for a particular model (and the accuracy of the early 60's magazines is also highly questionable)
From my own collection of back issues, and from my own experience high to mid fourteens is what the majority of musclecars (excluding such vehicles such as Corvettes, which don't make up the majority anyway) will do speedwise.
It is opinion based on some facts and some experience - not 100% unquestionable truth.

Interesting little tid bit I also found.

R34 GT-R Info gathered from: Skyline-Nissan.com, Automotivearticles.com

Price: $45,000 ($89,500 US)
Horsepower 277 bhp @ 6800 rpm
Torque 293 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm

Acceleration

0-60 mph: 4.7
0-100: 12.7
0-1320 ft (1/4 mile): 13.7 @ 103.5 mph

Maximum Lateral G: 0.94g

Corvette Coupe

Price: $45,000 (US)
Horsepower 345 @ 5600 rpm
Torque 350 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm

Acceleration

0-60: 4.8
0-100: 10.2
0-1320 ft (1/4 mile) 13.1 @ 109mph

Maximum Lateral G: 0.93g

As much as I hate 'mag racers' but these specs show me alot. A Corvette (non Z06) is more than a match for a stock Skyline. In both 1/4 mile and road racing. Start modifying each car and these variables change depending on what is done.

But here is my answer to the 700hp Skyline. Mallet C5
You know I'm usually with you on most things Matt, but I have to question those times for the Skyline. According to this:
http://www.automotivearticles.com/in...san/stagea.htm, The Nissan Stagea, which outweighs the skyline by about 400lbs, runs the .25 mile in 12.97 seconds, with the exact same motor as the Skyline...the RB26DETT. If you think about it though, the American magazine's drivers might not have been used to the left-hand shifting? either way, the 276-277HP figures are true. I believe there are a couple of factory-placed restrictors you have to remove to uncap the motor's true, stock potential. It's that damned "gentleman's agreement" they have in Japan with HP. Just as an addition, the JDM Supras do make only about 280hp...less than the U.S. ones...with the restrictions.

Well, either its a typo or like the Skyline... it's underated.

But if you add up the two times given from the sites I provided, the 0-100mph time for the Skyline is 12.7 seconds. Now, thats hardly at the end of a quarter mile especially for that car. Its end time is 13.7.. which when compared to the Vette which shows to be faster at 0-100mph 10.2 and a 1/4 of 13.1. You can see where the times are fairrly accurate.

Seems to make sense to me... I wouldnt of spent 20 minutes looking up Skyline info for nothing.

I could be wrong, the Skyline is obviously underated. So with all the restrictors on the motor its possible that it ran a 13.7... not bad but not God-like. Now the Stegasaurus... or whatever it is... might of been run with out the restrictors? Who knows... I still think my arguement stands.

Maybe true for R34s but for an '89 GTR try around 3100lbs...

But guess who's laughing when they catch up to eachother at the gas pumps? Ah, "carma"

(or for that matter, when trying to find parking on the street - or when washing their cars?)

Okay, so it's the old comparison of practicality versus the feeling of torque and speed when it comes to mpg and ease of parking, but washing their cars? What the hell is that all about?

Yeah... my Nova isnt any bigger than say... a Midsize car of todays standards. Like a Maxima or Accord...

Not exactly hard to wash... not like a '59 Cadillac or something.

Something that some American Muscle car fans don't understand is that some people would trade in some of the speed for handling and comftrability (sp?). Sure your mustang can do a faster 1/4 time than an Integra, but perhaps I enjoy driving an Integra more than a mustang becasue of the fact that it's much lighter and easier to throw around.

People need to stop caling every import a "ricer". It's too 90's...and it's pretty stupid. Just becasue someone made thier Civic look ugly to you does'nt mean they're all "ricers". Should I hate on GM becasue the mail-trucks they made for the post-office use are slow and ugly???

Not every import driver hates domestics and thinks they're better...for instance, I really like 91 mustang 5.0s, and the look of a 69 Camaro KICKS ASS. But I have my own taste and my own sense of style and I rather drive a small light-weight import

Well, I can see your point... But Muscle cars are actually pretty comfortable. Big huge cushy bench seats.. ahh Yes, nothing better than a Muscle car than for a hot date... Just slliddde her right on over next to you.

Sorry, you can take your little cars all you want... I want something I've got room to lay out in.

If you had tons of money and could afford either one which would you rather have though? Stock performancewise, I'd rather have the Z06, but the Skyline wins more cool points in my book.

Not a muscle car by anybody's standards - but the ultimate car for a hot date, would be a Nash Rambler, with the front seats that recline all the way back ...I want AMC back!!!

As for the car wash thing.... I've got 11.5 feet of Yugo to wash (and only 9.8 feet of Subaru, with an interior you can practically hose out - there's even "plugs" on the floor pan!) it makes a big difference, especially when the muscle car owner has an acre of chrome to polish (and when your neighbors are complaining about you "wasting" water during a drought)

I think I'd personally take the Vette, cause of the history it has with America...

But if I had a shit load of money, I'd consider owning a Skyline... But untill I get shot in the ass with gold bullets... or win the Lotto. I'm not gonna go around and buy mega expensive cars.

I'll stick to my $100 Nova.

Like I said, My car isn't that big. So it doesn't bother me. And my neighbors can piss off, they're always watering their lawn. I'm hoping I give their dogs heart attacks when I fire the Nova with open headers for the first time. Cause they're annoying as hell.
