Hondas/Acuras website does have a nice report on the RS-X (is there a hyphen in there?) and you're right, it doesn't say anything about the RS-X replacing the Prelude. But by the same token, it doesn't say it isn't replacing the Prelude either. I think most of this is all speculation about the demise of the Prelude nameplate. I'll believe it when I read it on Hondas website. |

Here's my 2 cents.
The Future of the Prelude Right now that is a big question mark. However, at this point based on what everyone has been saying, it looks like the Prelude era is coming to an end. Well, unfortunately, but not entirely surprisingly, money is the reason. The problem is that there's such an overlap in the sports car market between the Prelude and it's smaller, older, but better selling Acura cousin, the Integra. The Integra and Prelude use entirely different platforms, while both are so similar in terms of market perception. Both are front engine, front wheel drive, 4-cylinder Honda sports cars. The Prelude base is similar in price to the Integra GSR while the Prelude Type SH is similar in price to the Integra Type R. In North America, they draw the same type of buyers to their respective dealers. With the red-hot high-image Honda S2000 roadster coming to Honda dealers, thereby establishing it's high-end sports car segment in Honda's sports car line-up, and Honda having upgraded the Civic's sports car status with the Civic Coupe SiR (Si in the states,) one gets the feeling the Prelude is getting crowded out of Honda's sports car line-up. The Accord Coupe having recently undergone a sportier, flashier re-design doesn't help. Shame, as so many N. American Prelude owners would agree, the Prelude is in a market segment perfect for those wanting a stylish, unique, mid-price level sports coupe, but don't want (or can't afford) a high-priced 2-seat roadster, the S2000; don't want the sense of not-quite-mature-I'm-still-in-college image of the Integra; don't want a large family sedan-based coupe, the Accord; and also don't want a souped-up Civic. What's to result from the upcoming "Inter-Lude" is likely to be a combination of personalities, a size somewhere between the 2 cars, with both performance and luxury attributes. It's seems certain it's going to be badged an Acura in North America, without either of the Integra or Prelude designations, but going with the now-standard alpha-numeric names. (The "IL?") There were initial rumors of a S2000 based platform, but now I'm hearing a Civic-based platform. (wow, that's a big difference.) The Prelude? Well, if the recent rumors are true, the Prelude's lineage will be ending at its 5-th Generation. Of course, there's always the upcoming Acura "Inter-Lude" to look forward to, but to Prelude fans, it still represents the discontinuation of a beloved car.
