Actually, I think that "Camry" was a bastardized version of the japanese word for crown. "Kamuri," or something like that.

I like the way japanese auto companies insist on using english letters like "L" and "V" that don't translate correctly back into japanese. They have Honda Cibics and Prerudes, Nissan Silbias and Skyrines and Toyota Cororras and Cericas.

I like the name Maximus too. Not just from Gladiator but that's one of my cat's names.

I hate it when companies (*cough*Toyota*cough*) use names that mean or portray absolutely nothing. Camry? Corolla? Paseo? Tercel? Come on now....
--Heep

Silver S2000 is right about the origin of the name Camry. "Kan-muri" has something to do with the crown of a flower. Paseo probably means "path" (kind of a disgusting sounding name; should have kept the original name 'Cynos'), and a tercel is a male hawk. You know, when automakers create a new car, they form entire commitees dedicated to making the perfect name. I highly doubt there are many car names that no meaning at all.

Even though I own a Celica, I can't seem to figure out where the name came from. Any ideas?

Haha, some of these names sound painfully botched up when you actually hear the Japanese say them out loud. Sometimes they pronounce them with 4 or 5 syllables when they should only have 2 (soo-kai-rai-neu=skyline, for example). Back in '90, I heard this japanese man describe the Lexus SC300 as "Soh-wah-rah". A month later, I realized he was not describing it at all, but saying its name, Soarer!

Bless them for not spelling their cars' names phoenetically.

Perhaps it's not a specific car name, but I feel that the nicest sounding label is that of the specialty model designing company, Pininfarina. Not only is it ear-candy, but it's also a symbol of superb craftsmanship.

Lexus sounds nice . . .

As does Jaguar when pronounced with strong emphasis on the "U" with a distinct english accent . . .

I like Jaguar with a British Accent too, I know some people call it Jagwire which makes them sounds like idiots. Pinifarina is also awesome but, I like Barchetta the best. I translated it from Italian-English and it apparently means "Small Boat" ???

The best name ever is DODGE RAM. Its the most accurate. If its coming right at you, you better dodge or you get rammed.

Even better is the old RAMCHARGER. Try squatting down in front of (a parked) one with your face about a foot from the grill, thing looks ready to just charge!

Toyota

Although their names suck they do have meaning, you just never had a foreign language maybe, Paseo means walk/stroll in espanol, and tercel means something, but I had some of the worst spanish teachers and didnt learn much, but yeah, most names have meaning. just in case you cared

And the car with the coolest name is a 300ZX and then Maxima =)
