Just curious since you live in England and the Maximas over there are known to be a lot less underpowered than those here in America.

What year and what kind of Maxima did you beat? Also, what kind of Volvo were you in when it happened? What kind of mods did the Maxima have?

And for those who don't think so, the Maxima is a sleeper, it is a family car designed to pick up groceries and take the kids to their ballgames.
I did this in Plano TX

i beat 98 97 00 Maximas with a Volvo T5

236hp turbocharged 5 cylinder lump

the modified one had exhuast air intake and some other stuff (it sounded like it had something else done but i dunno what)

The Volvo was Black with black interior and had Factory Sports Suspension Kit and Traction Control which wasn't common on Volvo's in TX. Neither was the colour black for that matter.

Most of the Max's you run into will be 4th and 5th generation. Both 4th and 5th and 3 styles, GXE, SLE, GLE. GXE is the base, SLE is the sporty version and GLE is luxury. All have the same engine though so times between the 3 are very similar. The biggest factor would be if it is an auto or manual. Most Max's are Auto.

4th Generation:
95-99
190Hp
Torque: 205 @ 4000 RPM
5 Spd manual transmission was available.

5th Generation:
2000-2003
This generation started off with 222 HP and 217 lb-ft of torque but in 2002 increased it to 255 HP and 246 lb-ft of torque. Another important addition was a 6 speed Manual was available on the SE model.

All models are normally aspirated, unlike the GTP which is supercharged already. Some people have thrown superchargers or turbos on there Max's and those things scream...

I personally have a 99 and it is pretty fast. With my auto transmission my launches aren't that great (boo nissan automatic, I wish I had a nice Audi transmission on there) but the engine is strong.

Pullies and exhaust and the GTP would be beating/catching up to mustangs and lt1s, even some LS1s if caught sleeping. Now THATS a sleeper

or a 3rd gen!

Woot for my 160 HP, I can still beat most cars unless they are modded or are far more expensive than my car was new... IE Porches, SS models, cars with Twin or Large Turbos. It's still a damn good car, 12 years later with 198,000 miles

Still, the Maxima is BY far better looking than the GTP. It is also N/A while the GTP has a bigger engine and is S/C. I would take the Max over the GTP anyday. Just toss a Garrett GT03 if you want to add insult to injury.

While we're on the subject, can anyone think of any other sleeper cars out there like the maxima that you would never expect? Any cars ever surprise any of you?

Polygon's car and my car for one.

The old Dodge turbo-4's (which Poly's is) for another. The new turbo-4 (SRT-4) COULD be sleeper, but a lot of the new owner's attitudes don't make it that way.

My favorite one so far though, was my old Chevy Beretta GTZ. With a worked QUAD4 (2.4ltr I4) motor, I beat a an older M3 with it. Now, who would expect that from a Beretta? This was in 1994, BTW.
