This is outstanding. The textures and weathering are perfect.

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/24 Ferrari F40 Competizione

Happy new year everyone, a little more progress to show.

With the engine nearly finished I turned to the chassis...

The inner arches of the 1:1 car has vents on the front inner arch, to replicate this I first cut out a square whole in the from of each arch and then from plasticard built up some vents...

The cockpit needed the central transmission removing as this was only like this on the road car and not the Competizione model...

I then refilled this with more plasticard...

This was then ready for paint and CF decal...

I added the new small trans tunnel simply using a piece of sprue sanded flat, I also added the etched accelerator pedal and added a throttle cable. The bulkhead on the 1:1 has a removable centre section which is not depicted on the Tamiya moulding. I scored this into the plastic and then added etched fasteners.

Finally I built up the passenger seat mounting base from plasticard...

Lots more details to come for the cockpit area. Thanks as always for following

That is probably the most realistic finish to an engine assembly I've ever seen and I've been browsing some amazing models on this forum for a long time. Wow.

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/24 Ferrari F40 Competizione

thanks very much for your kind comments - here's a little more progress...

The interior is starting to take shape, I added the electronics boxes with Perfect Parts brass connectors and a fire extinguisher with details added from the spares box. There is a little more to do here but I don't want to go over the top...

Having done all the mods to the floor I added paint and c/f, the inner engine bay is just matt black...

I also decided to add the under floor 'veins', these were made from plasticard and covered in C/F for a little added detail. These seem to be common on most of the Competitizone's you see on the net but are not included in the Tamiya box...

finally, finished the wheels, not too much to do here I sprayed them with gloss black and clear coated with semi gloss clear. I added some tyre valves from fuse wire, the centre nuts are dark silver with a little wash with a very dark brown colour. Seems odd not adding tyre decals these days but the kit doesn't come with any... I may add some though if I can find a set of Pirelli markings maybe.

Thanks as always for following along

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/24 Ferrari F40 Competizione

Apologies for the delay... a residential work course got in the way of progress...

The interior is now just about there, I have only got the dashboard left to complete. I added a few more cables and a control switch above the centre tunnel using bits from old etch. The seat was painted with a heavy coat of semi gloss black and then is covered with black embossing powder. The seat belt hardware and straps are from a Modelers set. As there are numerous different variations on the colour of the interior door panels (I have ref pics with white, red and yellow panels) I decided on white for mine and added what I imagine is a strap from some black tubing to enable the driver to close the door once inside...

Having put a bit of effort on the interior I felt it was a shame to hide it all away so I decided to open both windows. The etch sets I had included some nice etched window frame surrounds and so with a brand new blade in my needle saw I cut out the windows to give me three sections, the rear and front triangle were edged in black and added as per the instructions. For the opening centre window section, in my detail sets there are some etched frames which would hide any slightly tatty edges as a result from the cutting. I used GS Hypo adhesive here which doesn't cause any fogging on the glass sections. I then made a new opening window section from a piece of clear plastic and added a small etched handle to the inside.

I have a little more work to do on the interior with the dashboard and then that should be done. The kit doesn't come with any roll cage which is disappointing so I am going to have a look to see if I can scratch one up.

I have also managed to get all the paint onto the shell and finished up the decaling work. I first removed the moulded front spoiler and using the Scale Motorsport detail set replaced it with an etched version, I covered this in CF. I then primed the body with automotive white primer, then once sanded and resprayed it was painted with appliance white. The yellow was next up using TS26, masking was very straightforward for this. Finally once this had all been allowed to thoroughly dry and harden I masked it up again and used Tamiya bright red, thinned and airbrushed. Overall there were no dramas at all, I only wish all masking spray jobs were that easy :-)

Decals all went on without any dramas at all. I added etched pieces for the front and rear grills, windscreen fasteners, towing eyes, bonnet and tailgate fasteners and badges on the sides. Going to get back onto finishing the final cooling bits for the engine bay next. Thanks as always for following and for your kind comments

Smile Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/24 Ferrari F40 Competizione

thanks for your comments... here's the final update before I post the Completed thread.

I scratch built a roll cage using all sort of bits from the spares box, it seems to fit ok and certainly makes it looks a lot more racecar rather than road car now... a bad omission by MR Tamiya tut, tut!

on the interior, I added some extra details on the fusebox rather than the printed flat fuses, I also added a few more electrical wires and more switches to the centre tunnel.

I also added the remaining bits to the engine bay, the two black air boxes and the radiators, I detailed these with some RB Motion hose ends...

So that's it, I will now put it all together and get some completed images up, thanks to one and all for you kind words and for following along.

Next up a Brabham BT34 from the good ol 70s
