Surely you don't want to disable only the starter motor, as you could still "bump" start the car?

A much better idea would be to disable the second point on the ignition (where the key normally sits when the engine is running). That way, they could crank the starter how much they like but the engine will never start as the ECU won't be "on" and therefore the spark plugs won't fire. This method also means they can't bump start the car

Either that, or put a switch on the fuel pump line.... that way the car will start as normal, but cut out after a couple of seconds, probably leaving the thief confused and thinking that your car is fucked and not worth nicking...

I installed one on my old 69' truck. You can order a battery switch from www.summitracing.com. If my truck was going to be somewhere overnight, I'd unscrew it (hidden underneath the passenger side headlamp accesible through the grill). This part totally disconnects the battery from the vehicle so noone could even push start it.

the starter motor kill switch is only really suitable for 'Anti-Hijack' there was a time when i was going thru an insecure spell, when i thought that i maybe a target for hijacking because of the car, so i installed it for that reason. it just doubled as another security feature along with the countless other immobilisers i had, and alarm systems on the car.

the best kill switch would be the fuel pump, or even better, the ECU, but be very careful what youre doing to the ECU, check wiring diagrams first, but ideally, cut the power to the ECU.

Surely cutting power to the ECU is going to cause the ECU to lose all its settings, and force it to relearn the engine everytime you drive?

Whilst I agree that cutting power to the ECU would be the best form of kill switch imobiliser, it probably isn't worth doing as it would mean that you'd lose your ECU settings all the time

Whilst I guess you could call it a little disappointing that the insurance
isn't discounted, that is not the main reason for doing this mod.

Surely the main reason is for piece of mind - to help try and prevent some scumbag from nicking your car?

Another way to make this "mod" even better would be to have a switch that when it disconnects your starter/fuel pump, connects the wiring to the horn instead. That way, when your friendly car thief breaks in and tries to hotwire the car, instead of the starter motor turning, the horn will sound and (hopefully) get someones attention!

Having said that, so few people pay any attention to a car alarm these days, that I doubt a blahing horn will make them turn around either

true, the insurance wasnt necessarily the main reason. but then again, how much demand is there for a g20 in colorado? with no discount, i would surely have to do this mod myself as opposed to getting a professional to do it. i dont tihnk it should be that hard, but i'm not in the mood to go fiddling around blindly in my electrical system, either.

It should take you an hour to do. All you are doing effectively is cutting a couple of leads and putting a switch on them - hardly rocket science...

My kill switch on the wire to the fuel pump. By the time I removed the seat, found the right wire in the loom, installed the switch and put it all back together it had taken about 40 minutes. The fun thing about cutting the fuel pump is that someone can start the car and it will run for a few seconds before dying. Quite amusing to watch if you've lent your car to someone and not mentioned the kill swith...
